Robert Downey Jr. timed the release of new Doctor Doom pictures perfectly, dropping them just before the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
Robert Downey Jr., famous for playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Infinity Saga films, is now taking on the role of the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. While four trailers have been released for the movie, Doctor Doom’s appearance has been kept largely secret. The only hint came at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, but it was a very quick shot that didn’t reveal his face.
Robert Downey Jr. is sharing a funny take on Doctor Doom on Instagram with a series of Valentine’s Day-themed pictures. One image shows chocolates shaped like Doom’s mask, with a playful alteration of the word “Valentine’s” to read “Happy Doomsday!” Another picture depicts the villain holding flowers, including several that look like him. In a nod to Downey’s role as Iron Man, one image shows the character offering Doom a peanut cluster. The final picture reveals a heart-shaped tattoo on Doom that says “Suzie,” a reference to Sue Storm (played by Vanessa Kirby). You can see the images below.

Robert Downey Jr. is playfully building excitement for his new movie, Avengers: Doomsday. He recently shared a photo of himself and his wife wearing Doomsday jerseys on Super Bowl Sunday and posted holiday-themed artwork featuring Iron Man and Doom on Christmas. Downey has also been lighthearted about the film’s release date coinciding with Dune: Part Three, playfully calling the date “Dunesday” and even sharing fan art imagining Iron Man battling a sandworm from the Dune universe. Both movies are set to premiere on December 18th.
Putting Iron Man in recent social media posts for Valentine’s Day and Christmas has intensified fan speculation about a connection between Tony Stark and the villain in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, especially regarding the Multiverse Saga. While many fans enjoyed seeing Robert Downey Jr. back as Iron Man, they believe there’s a hidden story behind him also playing Doctor Doom. However, it’s unlikely Marvel will confirm anything before the movie comes out.
Robert Downey Jr. isn’t the only familiar face returning for the new Avengers: Doomsday movie. Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor, along with Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America (Sam Wilson), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Letitia Wright as Shuri, and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi. The Fantastic Four, including Sue Storm played by Kirby, will also be featured.
