Adam McKay, a filmmaker known for tackling important issues, is now concentrating on climate change. However, he still plans to make a film about corruption in Washington D.C. at some point in the future.
Announced in March 2023, Average Height, Average Build was set to be the next film from the director of The Big Short. The Netflix comedy, about a serial killer who becomes a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., initially attracted stars like Robert Pattinson, Robert Downey Jr., and Amy Adams. However, the project was put on hold in December 2023.
Despite reports that the project was cancelled, director McKay recently clarified that Average Height, Average Build hasn’t been scrapped – it’s just been temporarily paused, as reported by The Playlist. McKay explained that the project took a backseat due to the recent strikes and the 2016 election, but it’s still being considered.
He explained that the issue caused delays in their release plans. However, the project is still moving forward. Despite being a comedy, it focuses on the massive amounts of money flowing through what he described as a corrupt system within the government.
McKay’s other project, which he prioritized over Average Height, Average Build, is still in development. He recently shared that the film, a climate drama with comedic elements, is now titled ‘2C.’ This refers to the two-degree Celsius warming threshold, a point at which significant environmental damage is expected to occur. He had briefly considered a different title, but ultimately decided to revert to ‘2C.’
In a June 2022 interview with Deadline, McKay talked about wanting to address corruption in Washington and how it impacts everything around us. He connected this theme to his film Don’t Look Up, explaining that while that movie focused on the results of our societal problems—specifically, ignoring the climate crisis—his new project explores the causes, which he identifies as the influence of large amounts of money in politics.
He added, “And it’s a comedy as well … blended with drama, but I would overall call it a comedy.”
I’ve always been struck by how Adam McKay consistently takes on huge, important issues. His film Don’t Look Up, with Leonardo DiCaprio – who I admire for his climate work – really hit home about the potential for global disaster. And it wasn’t just that one! He wasn’t afraid to call out the financial world in The Big Short, or even take on the Bush administration with Vice. It’s clear he’s a filmmaker who wants to make us think and question things.
I have to admit, I was pretty surprised when this director started making films like Average Height, Average Build! I loved his earlier comedies – Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers were just hilarious and so lighthearted. It was a real shift to see him tackling more serious, satirical stuff after those films.
