On “SNL50,” Robert De Niro squared off against Rachel Dratch. In a sketch towards the end of the special, the Academy Award winner challenged Dratch, who was portraying her Debbie Downer character, as a bartender.

Deborah, I’d like to speak now and you should listen,” said De Niro, acting as a bar patron. “I find this discussion rather unpleasant. Let me make it clear that I don’t want to discuss plastic in my testicles right now. To be honest, tonight I just wanted some respite from the chaos of our current situation, which feels like living in a soiled diaper.”
“Deborah, let me take the floor for a moment,” said De Niro, portraying a bar patron. “I’m not keen on this chat. Could we avoid discussing plastic in my testicles? I came here tonight hoping to escape from our overwhelming reality, which feels like living in a dirty diaper.
In the story about microplastics,” Dratch retorted, causing De Niro to jokingly grip her tightly, “diapers are often the main suspect.
In this scene, Robert De Niro made a brief appearance. The skit started with Downer playing bartender to famous guests like Drew Barrymore and Ayo Edebiri. Later on, Jimmy Fallon popped up, helping to resolve De Niro’s argument at the end of the skit.
Fallon called out to Bobby, “Bobby, hold on a moment! I believe she’s trying to assist, understand?” Fallon explained, reminiscing about how his children had taught him to find the good in others.
“Speaking of kids, it’s official: I can’t have children,” Dratch’s Downer exclaims.
Back in 2004, during Lindsay Lohan’s hosting stint on “SNL,” I had my first encounter with Debbie Downer. The initial sketch portrayed our DisneyWorld adventure turning sour due to her gloomy presence. The authenticity of the bit took a hit as everyone involved seemed to lose it and broke character, giving in to uncontrollable laughter during filming. Ever since that memorable debut, Dratch has graced “SNL” with her reoccurring character, Debbie Downer, several times over.
