Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Rob and Michele Reiner, has been officially charged with murdering his parents. The charges stem from their deaths at their home in Brentwood, and follow his recent arrest in connection with the case.
According to Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, Nick Reiner faces a potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or even the death penalty. Formal charges were scheduled to be filed on December 16th, the day after Reiner was arrested for the murder of his parents.
The accusations state that a knife was used in the murder of filmmaker and Stand By Me director, along with his wife, Michele, who was also a movie producer and actor. District Attorney Hochman addressed the case in a press conference, explaining that prosecuting crimes involving family members is particularly difficult and emotionally painful due to the personal and violent nature of these offenses.
Nick Reiner Could Face the Death Penalty
Nick Reiner is facing charges that include multiple murders, which could qualify him for the death penalty. The district attorney will decide later whether to seek that punishment. The current district attorney reinstated the death penalty in Los Angeles County after it had been paused statewide since 2019.
Nick Reiner is currently being held in jail – the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles – close to the University of Southern California. He was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, but his lawyer, Alan Jackson, told the press that Reiner wasn’t healthy enough to attend. Jackson is a well-known attorney who has previously defended high-profile clients such as Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. Earlier in his career, as a prosecutor, he successfully convicted Phil Spector in the murder case of Lana Clarkson.
According to two sources who spoke with People magazine, Rob and Nick Reiner were seen arguing at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien on December 13th – the night before they were killed. One source described Nick as behaving erratically and repeatedly asking guests if they were famous.
Nick Reiner battled addiction openly, and he collaborated with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, a movie inspired by his own experiences. According to Deadline, Nick had recently returned to live with his parents.
Rob Reiner is a celebrated director known for beloved films like The Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men. His wife, Michele Reiner, has also worked in the film industry as both a producer and an actress. She produced Spinal Tap II: The End Continues (coming in 2025) and God and Country (2024), and appeared as an actress in the 1994 film Mixed Nuts.
