Riot Games job listings suggest a secret LoL ARPG is in development

Okay, so it looks like Riot might be working on a totally new League of Legends game – an action RPG! I’ve been checking things out, and they’ve posted some job ads that seem to confirm it. It’s still under wraps, but things are definitely pointing in that direction, which is super exciting if you ask me!

The news lands as Riot pushes the LoL franchise into territory it has never occupied before.

Riot Games brought on Raymond Bartos, who previously led production on World of Warcraft, as a Senior Game Producer for their League of Legends MMO earlier this year. This signaled that the MMO, after a period of being restarted, was now actively in development. However, it seems Riot may be working on other games connected to League of Legends as well.

Riot’s Shanghai studio is hiring for an unannounced action LoL project

Riot Games is seemingly developing a new, experimental game in its Shanghai office, as evidenced by two recently posted contract job listings.

One job opening is for a Combat Game Designer to help create the combat systems for a new action role-playing game using Unreal Engine. Another position seeks a CG Animator skilled in creating visually distinct character animations.

Although the job postings don’t mention the project by name, they both highlight experience with the League of Legends universe as a plus, strongly suggesting the game’s world, Runeterra, is the setting.

As a combat game designer, you really need to live action games and ARPGs. It’s all about nailing that ‘feel’ in combat – how everything moves and connects. You’ve gotta understand the nitty-gritty of combat mechanics and how to make the AI challenging and fun to fight against.

Riot hasn’t confirmed they’re making any new action games based on League of Legends, and even recent job postings suggest development is likely a long way off. However, with a World of Warcraft expert leading a potential MMO and a team in Shanghai working on what appears to be an action RPG, it’s clear the League of Legends universe is expanding in unexpected ways.
