Okay, so Riot just announced some huge changes coming to League in 2027! Basically, they’re rebuilding the whole client – the program we use to launch the game – and they’re giving Summoner’s Rift a complete visual makeover. It’s going to feel like a whole new League, apparently!
It’s amazing to think League of Legends has been around for 16 years! Riot’s popular game has consistently remained one of the most-played video games worldwide for almost two decades.
If you’ve been playing League of Legends for a while and are looking for something fresh, Riot Games is planning some big updates to keep things interesting. These changes are so extensive that Bloomberg reports the game is internally being referred to as ‘League Next,’ signaling a major revamp expected in 2027.
Shortly after Bloomberg reported that Riot Games was secretly developing an updated version of their free-to-play game, Riot officially confirmed the news and shared details about what players can look forward to soon.
Riot details LoL revamp set for 2027
Riot Games released a short video update on December 18, 2025, earlier than originally scheduled. According to Andrew van Roon, Head of League Studio, the video was planned for release in January as part of a larger announcement about the start of the new season, as he shared on X (formerly Twitter).
However, due to some “early speculation making the rounds, we felt we should share it earlier.”
A look at some of our plans for League after 2026.

The video showcases League of Legends developers discussing upcoming updates and features. A major highlight is a redesigned client that will be seamlessly integrated into the game itself, eliminating the need for a separate application.
The developers also announced they’re completely redesigning Summoner’s Rift, the classic League of Legends map. While the exact changes are still unknown, they’ve confirmed the visual update will come with some adjustments to how the game plays, too.
We’re also working on improving the new player experience, though the specific changes are still being finalized. Finally, we’re making adjustments to Runes and the pre-game lobby systems to make everything run more smoothly.
This is all part of preparing for the future of League of Legends. We’ll be sharing more details throughout 2026, before the big update arrives in 2027.
