Rio & Rio 2 Set Netflix Streaming Date

Netflix is adding some popular animated movies in December, including a hit film starring Anne Hathaway and its follow-up. These releases are part of a larger collection of new shows and movies coming to Netflix for the holidays.

Rio and Rio 2 will stream on Netflix in December

Both Rio (2011) and Rio 2 (2014), the animated musical comedies, are coming to Netflix in the US on December 1, 2025. This is part of the new content being added to Netflix that month, according to What’s on Netflix.

The news was revealed in a preview of what’s coming to the streaming service in December, alongside titles like the new Mean Girls movie, Season 5 of Emily in Paris, and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. This is the first time in several years that both Rio movies will be available to stream on Netflix, after previously being shown on Disney+.

Rio, directed by Carlos Saldanha and created by Blue Sky Studios, tells the story of Blu, a macaw who has lived in captivity and is voiced by Jesse Eisenberg. Blu journeys to Brazil to meet Jewel, a macaw voiced by Anne Hathaway.

The movie made $483.9 million globally and received a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers particularly liked its vibrant animation, upbeat music, and entertaining voice acting. It even earned an Academy Award nomination for its original song, “Real in Rio.” Thanks to its popularity, a sequel, Rio 2, was released in April 2014.

Rio 2 follows Blu and Jewel as they navigate life in the Amazon rainforest with their growing family. Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, and George Lopez reprise their roles, and the film introduces new voices from Bruno Mars and Kristin Chenoweth.

The second movie earned $498.7 million worldwide. Critics at Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 50% score, describing it as visually exciting but overly busy. However, audiences loved it, giving it an ‘A’ grade on CinemaScore. Both films were among the biggest hits for Blue Sky Studios before the studio closed in 2021.

Rio and Rio 2 begin streaming December 1, 2025, on Netflix US.
