Ringo Starr‘s enthusiastic response is adding to the buzz around the upcoming film event, The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, even though initial images have received mixed reactions.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m incredibly excited about Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles project! It’s going to be four separate films, each one dedicated to telling the story of a different member of the band. The cast is fantastic – Barry Keoghan is playing Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson will be John Lennon, Joseph Quinn is George Harrison, and Paul Mescal is taking on the role of Paul McCartney. We just got our first glimpse of the actors as their iconic counterparts, and it’s already generating a lot of buzz – thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long, as all the films are scheduled to come out on April 7, 2028.
Starr responded to the first look at actor Barry Keoghan portraying him, along with images of the other actors playing the Fab Four. He captioned the picture of Keoghan as himself with, “What’s Ringo doing now? Peace and love,” and several cheerful emojis like a smiling face with sunglasses, a heart, musical notes, and a peace sign. He reacted to the group photo of all four actors with a simple, “Surprise surprise,” followed by more positive emojis and, playfully, four different face emojis. You can see his reactions below.
Starr wasn’t the only one sharing their excitement online after the images were released. @TheFilmJunkee was especially impressed with Paul Mescal’s look, commenting that he really resembled Paul McCartney.
Okay, I have to agree with @qLxke on this one – that photo of Mescal and McCartney? Seriously amazing. It’s just… a genuinely incredible picture, and I’m here for it.
Okay, let’s talk about Joseph Quinn. He’s definitely dividing fans! A lot of people are saying he just doesn’t quite look like the original actor, and they’re pretty upset about it. I saw one user, @harizsoeoed, put it perfectly – they said, “I love Joseph Quinn but we were robbed,” and then shared a bunch of comparison pictures to back up their claim. It’s a tough one, because he’s a great actor, but the resemblance seems to be a sticking point for some viewers.
Anna believes that Joseph Quinn, who plays George, would look even more like Harrison if his eyebrows were thicker. She feels this simple change would significantly improve his resemblance.
However, some people are defending Quinn, like @biggillpizza, who pointed out that it would be strange if the actors playing the Beatles, especially Joseph Quinn, looked exactly like their characters. They questioned why everyone is being so critical of the casting choices.
Joseph Quinn recently gained widespread recognition for his role as Eddie Munson in season 4 of Stranger Things, but he’s faced online skepticism before. Before the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, some on social media doubted his performance. However, after audiences saw his full portrayal of Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the film, the response became much more positive.
In addition to the actors playing the Beatles – Quinn, Keoghan, Dickinson, and Mescal – the film boasts a strong supporting cast including Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, James Norton as Brian Epstein, Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, and Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd. With so much excitement around the actors portraying the band and the project’s grand scale, every new detail about The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event will likely be closely watched until its 2028 release.
