Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi Epic The Martian Dominates the Streaming Charts on a New Platform After Netflix Exit

The sci-fi film directed by Ridley Scott was removed from Netflix on January 1st, 2026, but it quickly became popular on another streaming service.

According to FlixPatrol, the popular 2015 science fiction film The Martian is now performing well on Paramount+. It entered the charts on January 3rd, landing in fifth place. Other recent additions to the charts included The Da Vinci Code starring Tom Hanks, while the romantic comedy Regretting You currently holds the top spot.

The movie The Martian, starring Matt Damon, was a huge hit. Damon plays Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on Mars after a fierce dust storm. Believing him to be dead, his crew departs, but Mark survives and they must find a way to bring him home, despite the incredible challenges.

The movie was both a hit with critics and a financial success. It received a very high 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating widespread positive feedback, and earned $653.6 million globally on a budget of $108 million, according to The Numbers.

Critics weren’t the only fans of the sci-fi hit, The Martian. Astrophysicist Paul M. Sutter praised the film for its scientific accuracy, noting its realistic portrayal of scientists and physics. He gave the movie a perfect score, saying, “I’d rate these clips a 10 out of 10! It’s a wonderful film that really highlights science and how it can solve problems.”

The movie was also well-received, with retired astronaut Chris Hadfield specifically praising its realistic depiction of astronauts and their scientific approach to challenges, like Mark Watney’s ingenuity in growing food. However, Hadfield noted the film wasn’t entirely correct in how it showed gravity on Mars.

The Martian Will Receive a Replacement

Despite its initial challenges since its release, 2026 could see a turnaround. This is due to the upcoming sci-fi film from Amazon MGM Studios, also based on the novel ‘Project Hail Mary’ by Andy Weir, and written by the same screenwriter, Drew Goddard.

Ryland Grace, a school teacher and former biologist, finds himself waking up on a spaceship, lost in space and with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He quickly learns he’s the sole survivor of a desperate mission to save Earth from a fading sun. Though his crew didn’t survive the journey, he soon discovers he isn’t completely alone in his fight to save the planet.

Project Hail Mary hits theaters on Mar. 20, 2026. The Martian is currently streaming on Peacock.
