Ridley Scott’s $268M Action Epic Exodus: Gods and Kings Hits Tubi

While this director’s movies have earned billions of dollars and received widespread critical acclaim, his 2014 biblical film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, didn’t perform as well as expected.

Thanks to streaming services, more people can now watch movies beyond what was possible with traditional theater releases. Exodus: Gods and Kings benefited from this, and it’s found a new audience on Tubi, where it’s currently performing well, according to FlixPatrol.

The film Exodus: Gods and Kings opened at number six in the Top 10, alongside several other new movies. The Last Stand, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was the week’s top performer, while GoodFellas, Coyote Ugly, U.S. Marshals, and The Rock also joined the charts as new releases.

Exodus: Gods and Kings Was Banned From Theaters

Ridley Scott is known for directing historical epics. His 2000 film, Gladiator, is considered one of his greatest achievements. He’s also explored history with films about Napoleon (2023) and Robin Hood (2010), though not all of these historical dramas were immediately successful.

The film Exodus: Gods and Kings tells the story of Moses, though it deviates from traditional accounts. Raised as a prince in Egypt alongside Ramses, Moses becomes a key advisor when Ramses ascends to the throne. However, after learning he is of Hebrew descent, Moses is exiled to the desert by Ramses – a punishment that usually meant certain death.

As much as I enjoyed the beginning of Moses’ story, it’s really just the setup! The core of his journey is about to begin – he’s been given a mission by God to liberate the Israelites from their enslavement. I’m really excited to see how that unfolds on screen.

The film faced widespread criticism and was even pulled from cinemas due to its outdated portrayal of events and legal concerns. Egypt’s Culture Minister, Gaber Asfour, labeled it a “Zionist film” and justified the ban by claiming it contained historical errors – specifically, the inaccurate depiction of Moses and the Jewish people as the builders of the pyramids. Similar bans were also implemented in Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.

Exodus: Gods and Kings Didn’t Impress

Released just before Ridley Scott’s acclaimed science fiction film The Martian, the historical drama Exodus: Gods and Kings received largely negative feedback. While Egypt’s culture minister voiced disapproval, other critics shared similar views. The film currently holds a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 208 reviews, and audiences gave it an equally low score of 35%.

Given the poor reviews, it’s no surprise that Exodus: Gods and Kings didn’t perform well in cinemas. Despite a large budget – estimated between $140 and $200 million – the film only earned $268.1 million worldwide, barely breaking even. Fortunately, audiences can now watch it on streaming services.

Ridley Scott directed the film Exodus: Gods and Kings, which was written by Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Jeffrey Caine, and Steven Zaillian. Christian Bale starred as Moses, and Joel Edgerton played Ramses II. Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley were also part of the cast.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is streaming on Tubi.
