As a long-time fan of Ricky Gervais and his unapologetic humor, I must admit that I was looking forward to seeing him host the 2025 Golden Globes again. His wit and sharp comedic timing are unmatched, and he always manages to bring an edge to the event that keeps things interesting.

His recent post hinting at some of the jokes he would have made had he been emceeing this year’s ceremony only served to heighten my anticipation. The fact that he found so much material in such a short span of time just goes to show how relevant and engaging his humor remains.

It’s unfortunate that we won’t get to see him this year, but I have no doubt that Nikki Glaser will do a fantastic job. She’s proven herself to be a breakout comedy star in 2024, and I’m excited to see how she tackles the Golden Globes.

That being said, if I were hosting the Globes this year, I would have opened with a joke like this: “Welcome everyone to the 82nd Golden Globe awards! You know, I was originally supposed to host this event… but then they realized I’m not even nominated for anything. So here I am, just another uninvited guest at Hollywood’s annual love-fest.”

I can’t wait to see how the 2025 Golden Globes unfolds!

As a movie enthusiast, I was looking forward to Ricky Gervais returning as the host for the 2025 Golden Globes. However, it seems that he won’t be gracing our screens this time around. Yet, he did share some of the witty remarks he would have tossed out had he been at the helm of the awards ceremony on his social media platform. Known for being both iconic and contentious as the Golden Globes’ emcee, having presided over the event a grand total of five times, Gervais last stood before the Globes in 2020.

Gervais pondered over potential remarks during a bath, since he was scheduled to host the Golden Globes this coming Sunday. He found that the year had provided ample topics for his monologue.

Greetings, and a warm welcome to this year’s 82nd Golden Globe ceremony! What an extraordinary year it has been indeed. There was a surge of entertainers eager to visit The Vatican, hoping to meet The Pope. A notable number of them were from Hollywood, apparently they weren’t satisfied with being part of the second largest scandalous group in the world…”

This version maintains the original’s tone while using more polite and less colloquial language. It is easier for a wider audience to understand while still keeping the humor intact.

Gervais went on, “Justin Timberlake was found guilty of driving under the influence. If he had served time, he likely would have heard ‘Sexy Back’ much more frequently.

In this hypothetical scenario, Gervais might have poked fun at Diddy with the following joke: “Kevin Hart found it awkward attending one of Diddy’s parties because Diddy wouldn’t stop bothering him. Eventually, Hart had to exclaim, ‘I’m a little person, not a kid!’

As a follower, I’m excited to share that this year, I’ve been chosen to host the Golden Globes – quite an honor indeed! You might recognize me from my breakout comedy success in 2024, thanks to the hilarious jokes I cracked during Netflix’s roast of Tom Brady. This makes me the first woman to single-handedly host this prestigious event; Tina Fey and Amy Poehler previously shared the duty. I recently had a chat with EbMaster about my plans for the show, so stay tuned!

As a long-time critic and observer of the entertainment industry, I find myself constantly questioning the validity and relevance of award shows such as the Globes. It often feels like we are elevating these nominees to an unattainable pedestal, treating them as if they’re all in contention for Nobel Prizes.

Over the years, I’ve noticed a growing trend towards self-seriousness and lack of humor among some of the nominated productions. This leaves my writing team and me grappling with the question: Can we make fun of a show like ‘The Bear,’ or will it take itself too seriously? It’s all about finding that delicate balance, determining where the line is between humor and offense.

My personal experience has taught me that humor can often be a powerful tool for critique, but only if used carefully and respectfully. I believe that there should always be room for satire and laughter in our discussions of art, especially in an industry that so often takes itself far too seriously. The challenge lies in finding the right approach, one that both entertains and provokes thought without crossing any boundaries or causing unnecessary offense.

The 2025 Golden Globes air Sunday, Jan. 5 at 8pm ET on CBS.
