Rian Johnson has stated one thing is essential for any future Knives Out movies. He’s written and directed all three films so far: the original from 2019, Glass Onion (2022) which streamed on Netflix, and the next installment, Wake Up Dead Man, coming to select theaters November 26th and Netflix December 12th.
Rian Johnson told Variety he’s the only one who will ever write and direct a Knives Out movie. He doesn’t think of it as a franchise, explaining that he only wants to make another film if he has a compelling story to tell. If he loses that drive, there won’t be any more Knives Out movies.
As a huge fan of these movies, I’ve been following the plans for the next installments closely. It seems Rian Johnson is really focused on building something new with Benoit Blanc as the central figure. He’s made it clear he doesn’t envision bringing back a bunch of past characters for a big team-up like The Avengers; he wants to keep the focus squarely on Blanc and fresh mysteries. It’s a bold move, and honestly, I respect his vision for the franchise’s future.
What I really enjoy is that each story feels unique and presents its own puzzle. I also love working with actors, and I’m excited to continue collaborating with new ones. I’m now leaning towards assembling a fresh cast for each project.
After the hit movie Knives Out in 2019, director Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman made a deal with Netflix for two sequels, reportedly worth $450 million. Now that Glass Onion and Wake Up Dead Man are finished, the deal is complete. While what happens next isn’t clear, Bergman confirms they still own the rights to the Knives Out series.
Even though Wake Up Dead Man is the final film made under their current deal, Rian Johnson says there’s still potential for future Benoit Blanc mysteries, and it’s up to them to decide if they happen. Johnson explains, “We’re both excited after finishing this one,” and adds, “As soon as I have another idea, we’ll start working on it.”
In Wake Up Dead Man, detective Benoit Blanc investigates a mysterious death within a close-knit religious community led by the charismatic Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin). As Blanc digs deeper, he uncovers secrets and tensions that may hold the key to solving the case.
The film features a talented cast, including Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery was highly praised. Critics loved the new mystery for detective Benoit Blanc, and the film stood out for its thoughtful look at faith, as well as a fantastic performance by Josh O’Connor. Like the previous Knives Out films, it’s a cleverly constructed whodunit that all comes together perfectly.
