Rian Johnson’s Next Film: A Sci-Fi Thriller Inspired By ’70s Paranoid Thrillers

Following the success of his three Knives Out films with Daniel Craig – where he served as director, producer, and writer – Rian Johnson is moving on to a new science fiction thriller. The Knives Out movies were a critical and commercial hit, earning a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Johnson later directed two more films, Glass Onion and Wake Up Dead Man. He’s also known for directing The Last Jedi, the second film in the Star Wars sequel series, and the science fiction movie Looper.

Following the success of his mystery film Knives Out, director Rian Johnson is planning a return to science fiction. In a recent interview with Empire, he explained that the new movie will be inspired by the suspenseful thrillers of the 1970s, but with a touch of science fiction. Read his full thoughts below.

I’m really excited about my next project – it’s an idea I’ve been developing that I think is promising. Ultimately, you just have to trust your instincts and see where they lead. If I had to describe the genre, it would be similar to the suspenseful thrillers from the 1970s, with a touch of science fiction.

Johnson intends to rely on his creative intuition as he develops the story and turns it into a film. Having previously worked on Star Wars, a hugely popular and well-known franchise, gives him valuable experience. Though fans often categorize Star Wars as science fantasy or a space opera rather than pure science fiction, the stories still incorporate sci-fi themes. Johnson has expressed interest in revisiting the Star Wars universe, but only if the opportunity feels right for both him and Disney.

That experience will stay with me forever. I’m a huge Star Wars fan, and if the opportunity ever arises to revisit it with the right person, it would be a dream come true.

Rian Johnson’s previous film, Looper, was a sci-fi thriller, and he’ll likely draw on that experience for his new project – a thriller that also includes science fiction elements.

The 2012 film Looper features assassins who eliminate targets by sending them into the past. Starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt, it was both a commercial and critical success, much like Knives Out, earning a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s currently unknown whether Johnson’s upcoming movie will play in cinemas or go straight to streaming. His previous film, Glass Onion, had a short run in theaters before becoming available on Netflix. His new movie, Wake Up Dead Man, will follow a similar pattern, with a limited theatrical release on November 26th, followed by its debut on Netflix on December 12th.

Johnson has a good relationship with Netflix, making a deal for his latest project a possibility. However, he’s still a fan of seeing movies in theaters, believing that films like Sinners demonstrate that original stories can succeed on the big screen.

Rian Johnson has successfully directed films in various genres, like the mystery Knives Out and the science fiction film Looper. This track record suggests his next project will be successful, whether it’s shown in cinemas or released directly on a streaming platform.
