Although Rian Johnson‘s next Benoit Blanc mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, hasn’t been released yet, he’s already thinking about the future of the Knives Out series. The franchise, which began in 2019, has consistently delighted audiences with its intricate mysteries and the clever detective work of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc. The third film promises to be Blanc’s most challenging case yet – he’ll be investigating what appears to be an impossible murder involving a monsignor, and, as expected, there will be plenty of suspects.
While doing publicity for Wake Up Dead Man, Johnson talked to The Hollywood Reporter and gave fans an encouraging hint about a potential fourth Knives Out movie. He said:
“Daniel and I are already starting to formulate … what could the next one be if we do another one?”
I’m really excited to hear the director feels so good about Wake Up Dead Man – he says it’s left him creatively energized! That’s a fantastic sign for the future of the Knives Out series, and I’m eager to see what he does next. He also mentioned that…
“I don’t know why I would stop doing it if we could keep making them.”
The new film, Wake Up Dead Man, will have a brief run in theaters starting November 26th, for just two weeks. After that, it will be available to stream on Netflix beginning December 12th, hoping to attract viewers during the holidays. This strategy is similar to how Netflix released Glass Onion, the previous film in the series, in 2022 – a move that worked well for the platform. However, some moviegoers were disappointed they couldn’t see it on the big screen.
What’s Next for ‘Knives Out’ after ‘Wake Up Dead Man’?

Netflix
The future of the Knives Out series is now uncertain following the release of Wake Up Dead Man on Netflix. Back in 2021, Netflix made a deal with Rian Johnson for two sequels, giving them the rights to distribute those films. However, if a fourth Knives Out movie is made, it’s no longer certain that it will appear on Netflix.
When Knives Out came out in theaters, it was a huge success, earning over $312 million worldwide despite costing only $40 million to make. Great reviews and positive buzz from audiences drove those impressive numbers. Releasing the film in November also helped, as it became a popular choice for families during the holidays. The series has continued to receive critical acclaim, with Glass Onion and the upcoming Wake Up Dead Man both earning rave reviews even before their release. What’s especially remarkable is that every film in the series has a score of over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Netflix might be interested in making more movies in the Knives Out series with Daniel Johnson. However, both Johnson and fans would prefer these films to have a longer run in movie theaters – Knives Out did very well in theaters in 2019, and cinemas could really benefit from another popular, well-received film. Johnson is clearly enthusiastic about continuing to create mystery stories featuring Daniel Craig’s character, Benoit Blanc, and is eager to see where the series goes next after Wake Up Dead Man.
