Rhea Seehorn revealed how she landed the role in Pluribus, sharing the story after winning Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Rhea Seehorn told People magazine she accepted the main role in the Apple TV+ series Pluribus without even reading the script. She explained that she immediately said yes because she deeply trusts Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul – a show in which she also starred. “I honestly will follow Vince anywhere,” she said.
When Gilligan first discussed the project Pluribus with Seehorn, he told her he’d written a role with her in mind, but wasn’t prepared to share the script at that time. Even without reading it, Seehorn readily accepted the part, trusting Gilligan’s creative direction and their established working rapport.
In the sci-fi series, Seehorn plays Carol Sturka, a romance novelist who is unaffected by a virus that has turned most of the population into excessively cheerful and overly optimistic people. Apple TV+ described the show, Pluribus, as a story about “the world’s most unhappy person having to save everyone from constant happiness.”
Gilligan portrayed Carol as a flawed but ultimately heroic character. Despite battling her own personal issues, she was dedicated to saving the world from the alien virus and doing everything she could.
Seehorn remembered the first time she collaborated with the show’s creator on Pluribus. Gilligan pointed out they’d already been working together for ten years. She admitted she initially didn’t believe him, thinking he was embellishing the truth. But she quickly realized that, considering their time on Better Call Saul as well, they had actually been collaborating for over a decade – a surprising realization.
Seehorn described receiving a role written specifically for her by a highly acclaimed writer as incredibly exciting and humbling. She’s still amazed that the writer had enough confidence in her to create the part just for her.
Gilligan mentioned we’d been collaborating for ten years, which surprised me at first. I actually checked, and he was right – it has been that long! Considering he’s one of the most talented writers of our time, the fact that he wants to write a part specifically for me is incredibly meaningful, and I’m still trying to fully process it.
Pluribus season 1 is available to stream on Apple TV+.
