UK film experts Omar Ahmed and Ranjit S. Ruprai are about to launch The Cloud Door, a unique label specializing in distributing South Asian cinema to international viewers, starting with Kamal Swaroop’s groundbreaking cult movie “Om Dar-B-Dar” (1988) as its premiere title.
As a devoted movie enthusiast with a soft spot for South Asian cinema, I’ve often found myself frustrated by the lack of quality home video releases from this region. Despite the booming market for physical media and a passionate fan base eager to own iconic Indian films, many essential works remain elusive due to their absence in high-definition home formats. That’s why I’m thrilled about The Cloud Door’s mission – they’re stepping in to fill this gap, focusing on cult classics and modern masterpieces that have long been coveted by collectors and fellow cinephiles like myself.
Named after a short film by Mani Kaul, “The Cloud Door” is designed to bridge a substantial void in the home video market, as well as enhance cinema screenings through collaborations with film archives. This label intends to launch high-definition versions with added bonus content such as commissioned artwork, literary supplements featuring fresh writings, interviews with directors, and historical resources.
The “Cloud Door” brand is inspired by a Mani Kaul short film and aims to fill a large gap in the home video market while making it easier for movies to be shown at cinemas through partnerships with film archives. The label will release high-definition versions of films, complete with extra features like artwork, books with new writings, director interviews, and historical materials.
This label aims to spotlight films from both traditional and modern South Asian cinema, placing particular importance on directors of the diaspora hailing from the UK, USA, and Canada. Every film released will offer top-notch video and audio quality, with a strong focus on providing cultural background and historical relevance.
The founders boast impressive qualifications and extensive experience for this venture. Ahmed, a renowned film scholar holding a PhD from the University of Manchester, has overseen significant events such as the “Not Just Bollywood” season and recently arranged Indian cinema exhibits at London’s Barbican and the Leeds International Film Festival. Ruprai, recognized for launching Supakino, an innovative film screening organization specializing in unconventional themes, has made a name for himself in London’s independent cinema community with original programming ideas like “Turbans Seen On Screen” and “Bombay Mix double-bills.
A pre-order crowdfunding drive is scheduled for the movie “Om Dar-B-Dar,” with the production company aiming to deliver the film by the end of 2025. Film clubs will benefit from special pricing on screening licenses, helping the company expand the reach of South Asian cinema.
Ruprai and Ahmed stated that it’s high time for a specialized Blu-ray label focusing on South Asian cinema, as it has been long needed. This move will give film enthusiasts worldwide an opportunity to own these movies in high definition with additional features. We are committed to maintaining the same level of care and passion for cinema that is characteristic of top-tier boutique home video labels.
