In various films, the challenging topic of domestic abuse has been addressed. However, “Just the Two of Us” stands out by providing a particularly detailed portrayal of a deteriorating relationship. This engaging French psychological thriller initially presents a charming romantic encounter that evolves into love, marriage, and parenthood. Yet, as feelings of insecurity morph into possessiveness, one person’s joy gradually transforms into a chilling nightmare.
In 2023, “Just the Two of Us” made its debut in France and had a limited showing in theaters here in the U.S. last year. However, now it’s easier than ever to watch as it’s been released digitally and on home video by Music Box Films. I’m thrilled to share that this film is directed by Valérie Donzelli, who has transitioned from acting to directing, and co-written the script with Audrey Diwan. They’ve skillfully adapted Éric Reinhardt’s 2014 novel “L’Amour et les Forêts”, infusing it with their unique touch that gives the film a contemporary relevance and a fresh edge.

In the captivating role, I find myself embodying both Blanche and her vivacious twin sister Rose – characters as distinct as night and day. While Blanche is a guarded soul, wrapped in a cloak of reserve, Rose is an open book, unapologetically straightforward. Despite our differences, much like twins often are, we share an extraordinary bond and have each other’s back.
With gentle persuasion from my sister Rose, I reluctantly attend a gathering where fate brings me face-to-face with an old familiar face, Grégoire, played by the talented Melvil Poupaud. An unforeseen romance sparks between us, and it is Blanche’s journey that unfolds, captivating me completely.
Initially, Grégoire seems perfect for Blanche. Upon finding out she’s pregnant, they marry and have their first child together. However, the relationship begins to show signs of strain after Grégoire relocates them due to his job transfer. Blanche finds it tough adapting to living so far from her sister. The situation becomes more challenging when Blanche uncovers that Grégoire was less than truthful about his job transfer. Matters escalate further when Blanche takes a temporary teaching role at a nearby high school, which displeases Grégoire significantly.
As the narrative unfolds, Donzelli masterfully uncovers the layers of Grégoire’s abuse, showing its harmful impacts from Blanche’s perspective. Grégoire’s insecurities emerge as he shames, degrades, and manipulates through gaslighting. Blanche’s annoyance swiftly turns to unease, then fear. As his psychological torment intensifies, her crippling anxiety becomes almost unbearable. The movie grows progressively more unsettling as Donzelli escalates the situation.

The film’s impact is largely due to the standout performances of its lead actors. Poupaud skillfully blends charm and danger, displaying both the appeal of affection and the unease of possessiveness. However, it’s Efira who truly steals the show as the heart of the movie. Her performance, brimming with emotional depth, brings the film’s themes to life. Even when the plot starts to venture into genre territory, Efira ensures that the story remains grounded in reality.
Just the Two of Us” – A penetrating psychological drama portrays the complexities of an unhealthy, abusive relationship, reaching its peak tension in the final act before offering some much-needed relief. The concluding scenes are captivating, providing a fulfilling resolution to Blanche’s emotional journey. Though certain actions by the characters may seem illogical, particularly in the second half, the movie effectively delves into psychological abuse, isolation, and trauma, making it deeply relatable on a human level, thanks to Efira’s compelling portrayal.
