Christian Gudegast, who is both a writer and director, first stepped into the director’s chair in 2018 with “Den of Thieves”, a crime thriller and heist movie. This project had been in different stages of production for close to 15 years before that. The film was full of tension and action, but it didn’t get the positive reviews or box office success it deserved. Seven years have passed, and Gudegast is now returning with his second directorial venture, titled “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera”.
The original “Den of Thieves” ended on a captivating note, and it undeniably set the stage for a follow-up. In the new film titled “Pantera”, the original story’s main characters are back, and they remain front and center. Gerard Butler reappears as the rugged and battle-worn LAPD detective Nicholas “Big Nick” O’Brien. Meanwhile, O’Shea Jackson Jr. returns to his role as Donnie Wilson, a former petty criminal who became a major thief after fleeing to Europe with $30 million.
In the opening scenes of “Pantera,” we find the two main characters in distinct situations. Donnie, enjoying a lavish lifestyle across the Atlantic, remains captivated by the excitement of a heist. The movie starts with him and his gang executing a bold operation in Antwerp, Belgium, snatching diamonds for a lady broker named Jovanna (Evin Ahmad). Meanwhile, Nick is in Los Angeles, recovering from a bitter divorce and nursing wounds inflicted by Donnie’s betrayal. Despite this, Nick is resolute on finding Donnie, but the embarrassed law enforcement agency prefers to move past the incident.
However, following a hint about Donnie’s money transfers between a Panamanian bank, Nick’s fortunes shift. The financial trail points to Nice, France, where Donnie and Jovanna aim for an $850 million heist at the World Diamond Center, a heavily secured facility. They assemble a skilled group of crooks and devise a strategy to infiltrate the well-guarded diamond exchange and breach its advanced, seemingly impregnable vault.
Next, we have an unexpected turn of events. Upon arrival in Nice and gathering information from the local authorities, Nick locates Donnie and makes a surprise visit. Instead of apprehending him, the frazzled and exasperated Nick proposes joining forces with Donnie. And voila! Donnie is once again immersed in the game. However, the risks are now greater than ever, particularly when Donnie discovers that the diamonds he had taken were actually under the control of the Sicilian mafia.
Gudegast skillfully guides us through the intricate plot of this story, filled with characters beyond our band of thieves. The police, the mafia, and even disgruntled former crew members all have significant parts to play. Intriguingly, the focus shifts from action to character interactions this time, particularly between Nick and Donnie. Butler and Jackson Jr. complement each other effectively, and their relationship is more balanced in this installment.
Without a doubt, the story is steadily moving towards the grand heist, and Gudegast masterfully maintains a high-tension pace throughout. He skillfully creates suspense that escalates during the heart-stopping climax of his film. The ending offers an action-packed resolution with some surprising twists, setting the stage for a potential third installment if this one performs well. Here’s hoping we won’t have to endure another seven-year wait for it.
In comparison to its predecessor, “Den of Thieves 2” seems more refined yet retains the raw edge that defined the original movie. This installment offers stunning European landscapes and carries a somewhat lighter mood. However, at times it may feel lengthy, and it can be challenging to follow the actions of our thieves, particularly during the major heist. Nevertheless, “Pantera” proves to be an enjoyable sequel and continues to enrich a film series that has grown into a truly engaging experience.
