In contrast to its more recent shifts, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is reintroducing a well-known feature from the Ezio period, adding a fresh and captivating spin to it.
During a special interview with Game Development Director Luc Plante, he revealed that Shadows is drawing inspiration from its predecessors while simultaneously making sure every element aligns with an authentically feudal Japan atmosphere.
Speaking as an ardent admirer, I can’t help but reminisce about the beloved Ezio games where players got to establish a brotherhood of Assassins, serving dual purposes – aiding in battles and gathering crucial information en route. Excitingly, it seems this immersive system is making a comeback, having been meticulously redesigned and reinvented in Shadows.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has an ally system like the Ezio games

In the year 2017, Ubisoft surpassed anticipations when they launched Assassin’s Creed Origins, offering an expansive open-world adventure. This innovative gameplay included a refined battle system, role-playing game elements, and many other exciting features.
Ever since then, most installments within the franchise have adhered to a similar structure, diverging significantly from the initial roots of the series. However, Shadows maintains elements reminiscent of the early days while still offering a vast experience as another entry.
In both Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Revelations, the core gameplay revolved around Ezio developing an alliance of newly-recruited Assassins.
In this game, the players are assigned to design faction structures, advance their initiates to higher levels, and personalize their characters’ appearances. Furthermore, they can be deployed for battles where they can either stealthily eliminate opponents or join the fight with their swords if necessary.
Shadows elevates this mechanic to new heights

In our conversation, Plante emphasized that the system featured in Shadows wasn’t merely an “homage” to Ezio’s games; instead, it was designed to serve as a fully functional and enjoyable “feature that enhances the overall experience.
Through our research, we discovered numerous leagues had been established, and we found it intriguing. We decided to incorporate this concept into our work.
As a gamer, I’m excited to develop my league of stealthy ninjas and cunning spies. The system of forming alliances, which may seem familiar to some, reminding me of Revelations perhaps, yet it serves a unique role in this fantastical world we’re immersed in.
As a gamer, I can’t help but draw parallels to Ezio’s League of Assassins, yet Shadows carves its unique niche with this gameplay element. In this game, I can deploy my spies not just for routine reconnaissance during missions, but to aid in the pursuit of crucial figures. The ninjas I recruit aren’t mere faceless henchmen; each one comes with a rich backstory, purpose, and personal motivations that drive them to align with Naoe and Yasuke on this journey.
As an avid fan, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of building my own Homestead, a strategic stronghold serving as the heart of my operations within this world. Additionally, I’ll have the opportunity to uncover hidden lairs scattered across the map, which will bolster my network of allies and spies, providing them with much-needed support.
The development team emphasized that they wanted to provide players with a set of tools to shape their own experiences through exploration as a major priority. By revamping companions in an innovative manner, they aimed to honor the legacy of Ezio and simultaneously breathe new life into the franchise.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on March 20, 2025.
