Beware, spoilers follow for the season 1 finale of Spartacus: House of Ashur! Will the show bring back any characters we’ve seen before in future seasons?
Steven S. DeKnight, the creator of the Spartacus series, has hinted that characters from the original show might reappear in the new spinoff, Spartacus: House of Ashur. The spinoff already brings back Nick E. Tarabay as Ashur, and features Julius Caesar as well as a cameo appearance by Lucretia, played again by Lucy Lawless.
During a conversation with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant about the end of season 1, Spartacus creator Steven DeKnight hinted at the potential for characters from the original series to show up in the upcoming ‘House of Ashur.’ He didn’t reveal much about his plans, but suggested that either Pompey or Crassus might return.
Considering Caesar’s death, he was the primary link to the earlier series, besides Ashur. Are there plans to bring back other characters from the original show, or will the focus be on developing Ashur’s story independently?
I can’t give away any spoilers, but there’s another hidden link to the original series. Pompey, who appeared at the end of the first show, is currently a fugitive. We keep hearing about Crassus, and fans are eager to see him. Just like with the original series, where we heard about Crassus for three seasons before he actually appeared, that’s still a possibility. However, my priority right now is developing these new characters.
Okay, so the setup for this House of Ashur spinoff is pretty wild – Ashur somehow ends up in a timeline where Spartacus died in the Mount Vesuvius eruption. Honestly, though, most of the faces we’re seeing are new. Aside from familiar characters like Ashur, played again by John Tabay, and Caesar – who’s now played by Jackson Gallagher instead of Todd Lasance – we haven’t really seen a lot of the original, main players consistently pop up. But I get the feeling that could change as the series goes on.
According to DeKnight, the show could bring back characters we’ve seen before in upcoming episodes. Even though Spartacus: House of Ashur concluded with Caesar’s death, it creates opportunities for returning characters. For example, Pompey, played by Joel Tobeck, made a brief appearance in the original series and later had a larger role in the spin-off, suggesting a possible return.
As a huge fan of Spartacus: House of Ashur, I’m still waiting for news on season 2! Starz hasn’t officially given the go-ahead yet, even though the first season finished a while back. But the good news is, the showrunner, DeKnight, has said all the scripts were already written! That means they’ve definitely thought about how to bring back characters and plan future appearances, though we’ll have to wait and see exactly how they do it when the show comes back.
Even if characters from the past reappear, there’s no certainty the original actors will reprise their roles. The show might need to recast some characters, like Caesar, to reflect the time that has passed. However, Tobeck’s return suggests we might see some of the original cast members return to their familiar roles.
DeKnight isn’t sharing his plans just yet, and it’s not certain if any familiar characters will reappear. But since Spartacus: House of Ashur is expected to have several seasons, it’s likely we’ll see some returning faces before long.
