The developers of Resident Evil Requiem are uncertain whether the upcoming game will be able to recreate the intensely frightening atmosphere that has been a hallmark of the Resident Evil series for many years. They’re questioning if they can deliver the same spine-chilling scares that fans expect.
With Resident Evil 7’s director, Koshi Nakanishi, at the helm, Requiem shifts back to a first-person viewpoint. The game aims to deliver bigger areas to explore, more in-depth survival features, and a stronger emphasis on creating a truly frightening and psychological horror experience.
However, Nakanishi explains that after dedicating years to creating horror experiences, the team occasionally finds it difficult to determine if what they’ve developed is truly scary.
Resident Evil Requiem devs can’t tell if it’s scary
“After creating so many of these, we found it difficult to judge the scare factor ourselves until others played it,” Nakanishi explained to IGN. “We were genuinely concerned before showing the gameplay at SGF and letting people try it at Gamescom – was it actually frightening? We’d lost perspective. Creating horror games is what we do, it’s our daily work.”
This uncertainty influences the ideas explored during the game’s development. Nakanishi explained that when the team brainstorms level designs, they often wonder if their ideas are too outlandish or simply won’t work effectively. They constantly question whether concepts are too extreme or lack the desired impact.

He explained that they hadn’t actually filmed it, so it wasn’t removed from the project, but they weren’t sure what would be genuinely frightening. “So we’d plan, ‘we’ll do this, we’ll do that,’ constantly adding ideas. At one point, we wondered, ‘what if [Grace] suffered a serious leg wound, or even lost her leg, during the attack, and that would be really scary?’ But we ultimately decided against making it *too* intense.”
Shown for the first time at Summer Game Fest 2024, Resident Evil Requiem hopes to combine the intensely scary, confined feeling of Resident Evil 7 with the larger environments seen in Village. Essentially, it’s aiming for a blend of both games’ strengths.
I’ve been reading the first impressions from Gamescom, and everyone’s saying this game is seriously intense! It sounds like they’ve nailed a really oppressive atmosphere, and the gameplay is all about those high-pressure survival moments. Apparently, you’re constantly switching between being stuck in tight corridors and then thrown into these huge, dangerous areas – sounds like a blast, but also super stressful!
As a big fan, I’m really curious to see if Requiem can deliver the same kind of scares and thrills we’ve come to expect from the previous games. We’ll all have to play it ourselves in 2025 to find out for sure! Honestly, even the developers are on the edge of their seats, hoping they’ve created a game that’s as terrifying as it is ambitious.
