The next Resident Evil game, titled Resident Evil Requiem, is coming out next year, but it’s gone through some major changes. Initially planned as a large, online multiplayer experience, Capcom has shifted its focus back to a traditional single-player horror game. While the core horror elements and visual style will remain, the game wasn’t completely rebuilt from scratch.
Producer Masato Kumazawa told Press Start that while the multiplayer game is coming together well, it needs to be more frightening. He also mentioned there are still some surprises in store, but he couldn’t reveal what they are.
He explained that when the game was tested with multiple players, the horror elements weren’t very strong. While that version was enjoyable to play, the team questioned whether a long-time fan of the series would actually like it, and they ultimately decided it probably wouldn’t appeal to them enough.
Requiem’s development has spanned six years, including its time as a multiplayer project.
According to Kumazawa, Resident Evil fans primarily want a truly scary and suspenseful survival-horror experience. He emphasized that fear is the most important element for fans. Because of this, the development team knew they couldn’t simply update the game with new appearances and characters while offering the same gameplay. Instead, they aimed to create something new and exciting that still felt true to the core of the Resident Evil series.
The story kicks off with Grace Ashcroft, the new main character, finding herself immediately in a dangerous and overwhelming situation. Director Koshi Nakanishi explained this was done on purpose, noting that Grace begins completely unprepared for the threats she faces. He described her journey as a significant and impressive increase in power, calling the difference between her initial helplessness and eventual strength the biggest in the entire series.
Nakanishi shared that internal playtests have been very positive, with the team believing the game offers a thrilling and emotional experience – a real rollercoaster. He explained that players will feel intense tension followed by significant relief, creating a powerful contrast. This design is intentional, aiming to make the character development feel impactful while still staying true to the series’ roots in survival horror.
Resident Evil Requiem will be available on February 27, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
