Resident Evil Movie Reboot Coming From The Director Of A Recent Horror Hit

A fresh Resident Evil film is currently being developed, and there’s a heated competition among four prominent production companies trying to acquire it. This interest arises as Zach Cregger, director of the movie “Barbarian”, has already agreed to pen and guide the new Resident Evil reboot.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger’s version of Resident Evil is intended to return to its horror origins and align more closely with the original video games. This would be a refreshing departure from the previous Resident Evil films. The latest adaptation, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, aimed to adapt the first two games into a single movie, but it failed to impress in cinemas. The six Resident Evil movies prior to that mainly revolved around Milla Jovovich’s character Alice, who was created specifically for the films. So far, there hasn’t been a live-action Resident Evil film that has successfully captured the essence of the games.

As a passionate fan, I’m excited to share that unlike the previous Resident Evil films distributed by Sony’s Screen Gems, this upcoming movie is in a unique position because its director, Cregger, has built a solid reputation at the box office. His first horror film, Barbarian, was both critically praised and developed a dedicated fanbase, while his second horror project, Weapons, is reportedly scoring exceptionally well during screen tests, even though it hasn’t been released to the public yet. The anticipation is palpable!

In the report, just Warner Bros. and Netflix were explicitly named. Notably, Netflix has already launched a live-action Resident Evil series featuring Lance Reddick, along with streaming numerous animated RE films. On the other hand, Warner Bros., having secured the rights to Weapons in a past bidding war for Cregger’s services, might hold an advantage.

Paul W.S. Anderson, who has directed all six Resident Evil movies, is now set to direct a House of the Dead adaptation by Sega. Meanwhile, a documentary on George Romero’s unreleased Resident Evil film premiered in January. This suggests that fans of the games might soon see Resident Evil 6 on the current console platforms.
