Resident Evil 4 just set new record. No game in this series ever sold so fast

Many fans consider the original Resident Evil 4 as the finest game in the series, so it’s not surprising that its updated version has been incredibly successful. Debuting in March 2023, this remake broke records by being the fastest-selling installment in the series to date.

On December 19, 2024, it was revealed that Resident Evil 4 Remake had surpassed sales of 9 million units, marking an additional million copies sold since our initial report in October, which stated the game had found 8 million buyers – a growth achieved over approximately two months.

Alex Aniel, a business development manager in the gaming industry and writer of the book “Itchy, Tasty: An Unofficial History of Resident Evil,” mentioned that this was the eighth consecutive quarter the game had been available for purchase. He subsequently analyzed the game’s performance against the results attained by other series installments during a comparable timeframe.

  3. RE7 – 400 thousand (6.1 million)
  4. RE3 – 300 thousand (5.2 million)
  5. RE2 – 300 thousand (7.8 million)

The main point is clear – the RE4 Remake has been selling exceptionally quickly compared to any other releases in the series, leaving the second-place contender far behind. Considering the original’s fame and the fact that it’s a fantastic game, even commended by the creator of the series, this success isn’t surprising. Here’s hoping that the next installment, likely RE9, achieves similar success.
