28 Years Later 3 might be in danger of not making it to the big screen, according to a new report.
A third film from the team behind the recent 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has been approved for production. The sequel received excellent reviews, with TopMob praising it as “one of the best horror movies of the decade.”
Okay, so I just finished watching The Bone Temple, and it’s seriously messed up. It follows this guy, Spike, who gets caught up with this terrifying cult leader, Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal – he pretends to help people after some kind of apocalypse, but really it’s all about torturing them. Meanwhile, there’s this doctor, Dr. Kelson, trying to figure out a cure for the Rage virus, and he’s using this incredibly strong guy, Alpha Samson, as a test subject – basically keeping him sedated to see if it works. It’s a wild ride, and pretty disturbing, honestly.
To top it all off, Cillian Murphy makes a quick, exciting appearance as Jim from 28 Days Later in a scene that will leave audiences wanting more. However, a third movie in the 28 Years Later series might not happen.
Sony has reportedly lost confidence in 28 Years Later 3
Although 28 Years Later 3 is currently scheduled for release in December 2025, a recent report from World of Reel suggests Sony isn’t prioritizing the film despite positive reviews. The movie has only earned $57 million worldwide, a significant decrease from the original film’s $151 million earnings.
If the filmmakers are able to make a third “28 Years Later” movie, it will feature Cillian Murphy returning as Jim, along with his daughter Sam, played by Maiya Eastmond, and Erin Kellyman reprising her role as Spike/Kelly/Jimmy Ink.
We don’t know the details of the plot yet, but it seems the story will focus on finding a cure for the infection now that Samson has overcome his intense anger. According to reports, Netflix wants to buy the rights to make a third movie, but director Danny Boyle prefers to release it in theaters instead.
Sony hasn’t yet confirmed the news, so it’s best to view it with some skepticism for now.
Horror fans still want to see 28 Years Later 3

People who watched “The Bone Temple” have been expressing their frustration online about the future of “28 Years Later 3.” Many believe the third film should be made for artistic reasons, not just to make money. One fan even jokingly threatened to commit crimes if the movie isn’t made, saying it was a serious demand.
One X user praised the horror film The Bone Temple, stating it was a welcome success for the genre because of its deliberate pacing, intellectual depth, moral ambiguity, and meaningful themes. They felt its very existence within the mainstream studio system was a significant achievement.
Danny Boyle, Garland, and DaCosta have used the 28 Days Later films to explore complex ideas like how trauma affects families across generations, the dangers of shutting oneself off from others, and the appeal of charismatic but dangerous leaders. This approach gives both movies a thoughtfulness that many typical zombie films lack. Hopefully, Sony will allow Boyle and Garland to complete the planned trilogy and provide a satisfying conclusion to the story.
