Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind Alan Wake, announced that its CEO, Tero Virtala, is leaving his position, effective immediately. This news follows an announcement that their new game, FBC: Firebreak, didn’t sell well and will negatively impact the company’s profits.
Tero Virtala stepped down as Remedy Entertainment’s CEO after leading the company since 2016. Remedy has begun searching for a replacement, and Virtala will assist with the transition before leaving his role.
Markus Mäki, a founder of Remedy Entertainment, is now the company’s interim CEO. He’s stepping down as chairman of the board, and Henri Österlund will be taking over as chairman.
Mäki expressed his gratitude to Tero Virtala for his significant work leading Remedy since 2016. He personally thanked Tero for their positive working relationship and wished him success in his future endeavors.
In early October, Remedy reported that sales for their game, FBC: Firebreak, were lower than expected, leading to a $17 million loss. While they tried to improve player numbers and engagement, those efforts didn’t achieve the results they hoped for.
When it launched in June, the game reached a high of 1,992 players on Steam, but now only has 10 players playing on that platform. However, Steam isn’t the whole picture – the game is also available on the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players on PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass can also access the game.
Remedy Entertainment is currently developing several new games, such as a sequel to Control and updated versions of the classic Max Payne games, created in collaboration with Rockstar Games.
