Redfall Boss Reflects On Game’s Struggles And Studio Closure

Harvey Smith, a longtime developer at Bethesda, has spoken about the recent closing of Arkane Austin and the difficulties faced by their last project, Redfall. Arkane Austin, led by Smith, created the vampire-themed game Redfall. Unfortunately, the game, which was designed as a live-service title, didn’t attract enough players after its release in May 2023. As a result, Microsoft shut down the studio a year later and largely stopped providing updates for the game.

In a recent appearance on the My Perfect Console podcast, Smith explained that each company has its own reasons for the choices it makes, as reported by Eurogamer.

According to Smith, the surprising part of Arkane Austin’s closure was that Arkane, as a whole—including the team behind Dishonored, Arkane Lyon—had consistently created popular and profitable games.

He explained that creative work is often unexpected. While it was surprising at first, he was most concerned for those who were new to the field – people for whom this was their first project or who hadn’t been working in the industry for very long.

Honestly, I was really bummed to hear about Arkane Austin getting shut down. Smith – he’s a big name in the industry – said he totally believed in that studio and thought they had a bright future. He even mentioned they were working on something really cool, which is a shame we won’t get to see now.

According to Smith, Redfall’s 1.4 update, which came after the announcement of Arkane Austin’s closure, included many fixes and improvements that could have made the game more successful if they’d been available when it first launched.

He suggested that if they’d initially released the product with those features and then improved it over time, things might have turned out differently.

TopMob gave Redfall a score of 4 out of 10 in their review. Reviewer Mark Delaney stated that the game felt unfinished and shouldn’t have been released in its current state.

The team at Arkane Lyon is developing a new game based on the Marvel character Blade, but there haven’t been any updates on its progress in a while.
