Recently, I can’t help but notice the surge in talk surrounding Elon Musk, and it’s not just due to rumors about him cheating in “Path of Exile 2.” During President Donald Trump’s inauguration three days ago, this billionaire made a point to echo Trump’s greeting with a Roman salute. This action immediately brought back memories of World War II times for many, sparking a conversation about the true intentions behind Musk’s gesture.
In this case, it’s not a new occurrence that the wealthiest individual on earth has stirred up debate due to his actions. Yet, for certain individuals, the happenings at the inauguration served as the tipping point.
Players against Twitter
By October 2022, Elon Musk had taken ownership of Twitter, later rebranding it as X. Over the subsequent two years, the platform underwent numerous transformations, some of which garnered criticism from users. Among their concerns were the launch of paid subscriptions and an AI-driven content generation program. It’s important to note that a considerable number of game developers migrated to BlueSky due to these changes.
In addition to these, there are numerous gaming communities that have sparked a significant campaign across Reddit aimed at prohibiting Twitter links. You’ll also encounter sports, political, cinematic, literary, and other subreddits participating in such boycotts. Across multiple platforms, boycott proposals are prevalent. Some of these communities have chosen to enforce this regulation officially.
Among these were communities like Baldur’s Gate 3 and World of Warcraft, which issued short statements detailing their reasons for the decision. In the case of World of Warcraft (WoW), not only are external links prohibited, but also screenshots from the platform itself. Instead, they recommend platforms such as BlueSky, where some official game and studio accounts have relocated to instead.
The initiative was greeted with much excitement by fans, anticipating an uptick in approval ratings from allies within the world of Baldur’s Gate. Some advocate for a successful boycott as a means to motivate developers to explore alternative ways of communication, even reviving long-dormant official game websites.
In case such actions transpire, it might compel Blizzard to disclose information through alternative channels, such as their World of Warcraft (WoW) website or discussion forums – a fact I was previously unaware of.

In the era of early internet, I found great pleasure in personally navigating gaming websites for updates. Nowadays, it’s more convenient as all the news is typically gathered in a single or just a few platforms, but there was an undeniable charm in the traditional approach.
– Barnhard
The user of the r/pcgaming community expressed wider concerns about actions and decided to participate in the boycott. They have disclosed that banning links to Twitter has been under consideration for quite some time due to the escalating amount of harmful content. Furthermore, they explain why a similar outcome might not occur with other social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram.
As a dedicated user, I find myself navigating without Facebook and Instagram posts due to their current ban, and other social media platforms not providing fresh content either. Moreover, any content that may disrupt our users’ experience or fail to meet our moderation standards will be swiftly filtered out. At present, Bluesky is the ideal choice for sharing links in tweets, as it aligns better with our preferences.

In the past couple of days, the initial links have been banned. It’s plausible that an increasing number of Reddit forums might decide to take part in this action.
