As a seasoned movie critic with a lifetime of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that the holiday season has truly outdone itself this year with “Red One.” Having witnessed countless blockbusters and indie gems alike, I can confidently declare that this film has carved out its own unique niche in the world of Christmas movies.
This December will be one for the books at Prime Video! According to their reports, the Christmas movie “Red One,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, garnered a staggering 50 million global viewers in its first weekend on the platform (measured over four days). This makes it Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched film premiere ever on their streaming service.
It’s quite remarkable for this Christmas movie, which had a whopping $250 million budget and grossed $32 million in the U.S. last month. Kevin Wilson, head of theatrical distribution at Amazon MGM, explained their reasoning for investing such a large amount without necessarily needing high ticket sales. In an interview with EbMaster in November, he said, “Regardless of whether people enjoy it or not, the worth of these movies is different for our business model… If we can release these movies in theaters and cover our print and advertising costs, why wouldn’t we? We’re getting a massive marketing campaign that’s being paid for before the film reaches streaming.
Although film critic Owen Gleiberman from EbMaster gave the movie a generally poor review with a score of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, it received a more positive response from audiences, earning an A- grade on CinemaScore.
Currently running on more than 3,000 screens in North America and over 3,300 screens worldwide, the movie titled “Red One” features an impressive cast including Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Wesley Kimmel, and J.K. Simmons. Jake Kasdan directed this film, with Chris Morgan penning the screenplay. Hiram Garcia, Dwayne Johnson, and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, Chris Morgan, Chris Morgan Productions, The Detective Agency’s Jake Kasdan, and Melvin Mar are the producers.
This PG-13 holiday action comedy centers around Callum Drift, portrayed by Johnson, who is the chief of North Pole security. He finds himself unwillingly partnered with Chris Evans’ mischievous hacker, Jack O’Malley. Together, they embark on a mission to rescue Santa Claus before Christmas arrives.
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, stated that ‘Red One’ has been well-received by audiences in cinemas and on Prime Video, suggesting it will endure as a cherished holiday movie for years to come. Every film is unique, and we’re grateful for our collaboration with the filmmakers in determining the best approach to reach the largest audience possible. For ‘Red One’, it was crucial to incorporate a theatrical release and promotional campaign that attracted viewers to theaters and increased visibility for the movie among those who would later stream it on Prime Video. It’s satisfying to see our strategy succeed, benefiting customers, and we’re grateful to the entire filmmaking team and cast for their contributions to its success.
Amazon’s Prime Video announced that Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Road House” was their top debut title this year, with a reported 50 million viewers. However, it is important to note that this viewership number was accumulated over the course of two weekends, while “Red One” had its viewership tallied within a four-day window.
