Red Dead Redemption 2 has a lot of strange mysteries players can investigate. Although many of the game’s biggest secrets have been known for a long time, the oldest mystery was only recently solved.
Towards the end of 2025, Red Dead Redemption 2 players discovered a previously unseen element in the game, igniting a fresh round of speculation and detective work after seven years since its original release.
Players found a trail of spider webs leading to a telephone pole. Shooting the pole revealed a hidden message that sent them on a scavenger hunt – from one pole with a guitar symbol to another with two birds on a building, and onward to more puzzling clues.
The mystery is incredibly strange – so much so that a developer who used to work at Rockstar Games commented on it. They were amazed players managed to find it, saying they’d thought it would remain hidden forever.
It seems the spider webs weren’t the starting point of the mystery after all – players discovered the clues out of order. The real beginning of the Spider Dream Mystery actually goes back to something players have been curious about for a long time: the pentagram found in Butcher Creek.

The truth behind Red Dead Redemption’s mysterious pentagram revealed
A recent YouTube video by RDR2 content creator Strange Man explains how he found a connection between the glowing red pentagram under a house in Butcher Creek and the game’s Spider Dream Mystery.
Strange Man observed that the pentagram, visible only between 4 and 5 AM, appears to be constructed from the same type of mesh cabling used in the spider webs.
The pentagram actually guides players to five outhouses, each with a tally mark inside of them.
The fourth toilet building has more carvings, including the letters “LJ” and “SM,” as well as a symbol of Fort Brennand. At the fort itself, there are six marks on the toilet building and seven more carved into the entrance of a nearby tower. Inside the tower, three additional symbols depict a telephone pole, a factory, and what looks like an oil slick.
After that, the markings at Fort Brennand guide you to the pole with the spider carving, leading you closer to solving the mystery.
Okay, so the hunt’s gotten a little tricky lately – a lot of us are stuck trying to figure out what comes next. It’s gotten so confusing that some players are even going back to Grand Theft Auto 5, thinking this new stuff is connected to the old Mt. Chiliad mystery. It’s wild!
We’re also considering the possibility that Birds of Paradise plants might be involved, but it’s too soon to know for sure.
With the release of GTA 6 scheduled for November 19, 2026, fans are eagerly trying to understand the current storyline, but it’s unknown whether it will have a satisfying conclusion or if planned resolutions have been removed.

Although data miners haven’t discovered any new weapons or cosmetic items in the game’s code yet, dedicated Red Dead Online players are still thoroughly searching the game world for hints and trying to solve this mystery.
Okay, so it turns out that pentagram we found in Butcher Greek wasn’t just there to scare us! It’s actually tied into a much larger story, which is awesome. I was starting to think it was just a cool detail, but now I’m really excited to see where this goes.
