The ongoing puzzle of Red Dead Redemption 2’s last hidden mystery has become even more interesting after a former developer commented on a major discovery made by fans.
Towards the end of 2025, players of Red Dead Redemption 2 discovered a significant new mystery, now known as the ‘Spider Dream Mystery.’
The strange events began when people noticed a carved spider on a telephone pole close to Cornwall Kerosene & Tar. Above it was a web containing a feather, but it was only visible for a very short time. The spider carving seemed to indicate the location of seven other similar webs, all of which appeared and disappeared quickly.
Okay, so I’ve been noticing these weird webs in the game. They only pop up really late – usually between 2 and 3 AM, or sometimes 3 and 4 AM. If it’s not those hours, they’re just gone. There’s also a bigger web that shows up even earlier, like 1 or 2 AM. This one’s different though, it doesn’t have any of those feathery bits, and it lines up with this telephone pole nearby to make a big ‘N’ shape. It’s pretty creepy!
Players continued north from the main spiderwebs to a different telephone pole they could shoot at. Once they damaged the pole, they found the letter “W” carved into it, along with directions pointing to five more poles.
Moving five poles to the west reveals another pole you can shoot. Hitting that pole displays a second inscription with “NW” and a symbol that looks like a guitar. This clue directed players to Fort Wallace, where they followed a guitar-related lead up a tower with two bird markings. This ultimately led them to a question mark actually carved into the side of a mountain.
The search for clues has stalled, but players haven’t given up. As concerns rise that this puzzle was originally planned but never finished, a developer who used to work on the game has addressed the community’s findings.
RDR2 dev didn’t think players would ever find the ‘Spider Dream Mystery’
Adam Butterworth, a former Rockstar developer who worked on quality assurance for Red Dead Redemption 2, said he was surprised by what the community discovered.
He was amazed someone actually found it, saying he’d initially dismissed the possibility of it ever being discovered.
His words hint that the mystery is deeper than it appears, but also suggest it will be difficult to figure out what to do next.
We don’t know what the prize for this puzzle is, or even if it can be solved.

Some players think a recent comment from Butterworth might be a subtle announcement. One person suggested that when he said he ‘heard about this,’ he actually meant work on it was already underway.
Some people believe the “NW” is simply a nod to audio programmer Nickolas Warseck – a hidden inside joke with no deeper meaning.
Since dedicated players have already thoroughly searched the game’s files, any significant reward would have been discovered by now. If there is something left to find, it’s likely to be minor – probably not a new weapon or item.
The developer’s confirmation of this strange occurrence has only fueled further discussion, as players race to uncover the truth before Rockstar Games releases its next big title, the eagerly awaited GTA 6, on November 19, 2026.
