With the release of the new Peaky Blinders film, a descendant of an original gang member is criticizing some of the show’s most devoted fans.
As a huge Peaky Blinders fan, I’m so excited! The sequel movie, ‘The Immortal Man,’ is out in theaters now, and soon we’ll be able to watch it on Netflix too. It’s a great time to be a fan!
The show is being renewed for two more seasons, which will take place in the 1950s during Birmingham’s rebuilding after the war and will follow a new generation of the Shelby family.
The only disappointing news is that Cillian Murphy won’t be returning as Thomas Shelby. He’s said he’s finished with the role. Additionally, someone connected to the real-life gang the show is based on has asked fans to stop dressing up and pretending to be Peaky Blinders in public.
Peaky Blinder’s great-grandson issues stark warning to fans
Social historian Professor Carl Chin, whose great-grandfather was actually a member of the original Peaky Blinders gang, isn’t happy with the current trend of people dressing up as and idolizing these gangsters.
According to author Carl Chinn, many people are focusing too much on the romanticized version of the Peaky Blinders and overlooking the historical gang’s actual violent, racist, and abusive behavior. He’s researched the real Peaky Blinders extensively and believes these serious issues are being ignored.
Fans often treat it as a trend, focusing on the look – wanting to dress like the characters with the hats and suits.
You know, when I first heard about the Peaky Blinders, I always pictured these fancy, well-dressed gangsters. But the real Peaky Blinders? They were actually just ordinary, struggling guys. Most of them were street vendors trying to earn a little money, or they were doing tough, unskilled labor just to get by. They definitely couldn’t afford all the stylish clothes the show portrays – they were just trying to make ends meet!
He also points out that it’s concerning how many young men are drawn to a romanticized view of gangs, which doesn’t reflect the reality of gang life.
Growing up, he discovered his great-grandfather, Derrick, was a violent and abusive man who mistreated his wife. This realization profoundly changed his understanding of that way of life.
I don’t boast about being related to a Peaky Blinder, but I am incredibly proud to come from a long line of strong women in Birmingham. They’re the real heroes of our city’s history, not the gangsters you see in the shows.
