Okay, so I just learned something really cool. Apparently, Johnny Depp played the real-life undercover cop Joe Pistone in the movie Donnie Brasco. And get this – Pistone says Depp still visits his family, like his kids and grandkids, almost 30 years after the movie came out! That’s a seriously awesome connection, and shows what a great guy Depp is, right?
Okay, so I recently watched Donnie Brasco, and it’s a really gripping movie. It’s about this FBI agent, Joe Pistone – played by Johnny Depp – who goes deep undercover in the 70s, basically becoming friends with a mob hitman named Lefty, who Al Pacino plays brilliantly. The more time Joe spends living that life, the harder it gets to separate his real identity from the persona he’s built within the criminal world. It’s a seriously intense ride as you watch him get pulled further and further in.
The film Donnie Brasco is based on the real-life, six-year investigation led by Joseph Pistone, which concluded in 1981. His work led to over 100 convictions and significantly weakened the Mafia. Pistone also acted as a consultant on the 1997 movie to guarantee its accuracy.
He clearly built a strong connection with Johnny Depp, and the actor remains a friend in his life today.

Pistone recently shared details about his life on the Mad That podcast, revealing he’s remained friends with the actor for nearly three decades since the movie Donnie Brasco came out.
We still consider Johnny Depp a friend, and so do my children and grandchildren. He came to visit us in the United States for a couple of days in January, and we all enjoyed the visit. It’s special for the kids to have a friend like him, you know?” Pistone said.
The fact that Johnny and I have remained close friends for so long says a lot about his character. He’s the kind of person my granddaughter can always reach – he’ll pick up the phone no matter where he is. That really speaks to who Johnny Depp is.
The former FBI agent described watching a movie about his life as a very strange experience, admitting it even brought tears to his eyes. He explained that when you’re working undercover or in law enforcement, you don’t expect your story to become a bestselling book or a popular movie, so seeing it all play out on screen made him reflect on whether those events actually happened and if he really did those things.
So, Harry Robinson, the host, mentioned that Joe Pistone is still in witness protection because of the original case. They didn’t even know where he was calling from when he contacted them! It’s crazy. After rewatching Donnie Brasco, I checked out what movies everyone’s hyped about for 2026 – some cool stuff coming up!
