Jack Reacher is famous for working alone, and the Prime Video series mostly stays true to that. However, one character, Frances Neagley – played by Maria Sten – has consistently worked alongside him, appearing in all three seasons so far. She’s the only other character to do so.
While Neagley isn’t a major character in Lee Child’s books, she’s become a fan favorite on the Reacher TV show. She played a significant role in the later episodes of seasons one and three, and was consistently featured throughout season two. Now, as season four approaches, the show faces a challenge with the Neagley character for the first time.
Neagley’s Spinoff Complicates Her Presence In Reacher Season 4
Maria Sten, who plays Neagley in the popular series Reacher, has become a fan favorite. Because of her popularity, Amazon is creating a spinoff show focused on her character, scheduled to premiere in 2026 before the fourth season of Reacher. While fans are excited, this new show presents some scheduling challenges for the original Reacher series.
If Neagley is getting her own show, it’s crucial that it feels distinct and doesn’t overlap with Reacher. This means she can’t continue to have a major role in Reacher like she has in the past. It wouldn’t make sense to build a series around Neagley if she’s already a key character in another show.
Currently, it hasn’t been officially announced whether Maria Sten will be in season 4 of Reacher. If she does appear, it will probably be a smaller role, similar to how Alan Ritchson is expected to make a brief appearance in Neagley. It seems the show is moving away from Frances Neagley being a consistent partner to her former boss.
How Can Reacher Explain Neagley’s Absence?
Previous seasons of Reacher have established a pattern: whenever Jack Reacher faces trouble, he immediately calls Neagley for help. It would be unusual if he didn’t do so again in season 4, particularly since he vowed to improve their communication after the events involving AM and Langston.
As a big fan of the Reacher series, I always thought it was clever how they handled Roscoe’s departure in season 3 – Reacher could at least explain why Neagley wasn’t around while he was undercover. But honestly, I’m a little worried about how they’re going to write out Maria Sten’s character in season 4. It doesn’t seem like it will be as easy or make as much sense.
To smoothly connect seasons, Reacher season 4 could benefit from what happens in the Neagley spinoff. Maybe the first case in the spinoff is particularly difficult, leaving Neagley needing time to recuperate – which could explain why Reacher doesn’t ask for her assistance in season 4.
Reacher Season 4 Needs A Neagley Replacement
I’m so glad Neagley’s been in every season of Reacher – and for good reason! She’s just a fantastic character, but she also does so much for the show’s storytelling. Basically, she lets them tell multiple stories at once because she’s a total badass who can handle things just like Reacher. We, the audience, instantly know she’s just as capable, so it’s easy to follow what’s happening with her even when Reacher is somewhere else. It’s a really smart way to expand the world of the show!
Neagley’s established relationship with Reacher is key to the show’s strength. Since Reacher typically meets new people each season, his connections often start over. This means he frequently has to build relationships from scratch. Keeping Neagley around allows Alan Ritchson, who plays Reacher, to show more depth and growth in his character over time.
Because she’s known Reacher for so long, Neagley understands him as well as the viewers do, and that’s important for Alan Ritchson’s performance. So, if Neagley isn’t in season 4 of Reacher, the only characters who could realistically take her place are David O’Donnell or Karla Dixon.
