What do we know?
In early 2024, a known source of gaming information, Nate the Hate, reported that Red Dead Redemption 2 is planned to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025. He also mentioned updates are coming to improve the game’s performance on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
As a big fan, I’ve been enjoying Red Dead Redemption 2 on my PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for a while now thanks to backwards compatibility. It reminded me of how we could play GTA 5 on the new consoles before Rockstar released a proper, upgraded version for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S back in March 2022. It was great to see them really improve GTA 5 for the new hardware, and I’m hoping for something similar for Red Dead 2!
In October 2025, Nate the Hate mentioned that the ports were still being developed, but couldn’t provide a release date.
We don’t yet know what improvements the new PS5 and Xbox Series X|S models will offer, but better graphics and faster performance are likely possibilities.
The first Red Dead Redemption was released on Nintendo Switch in 2023, though it first came out in 2010.
What has Rockstar/Take-Two said?
Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t officially announced any new versions of Red Dead Redemption 2. But, during a recent financial update, Take-Two revealed they’re working on eight updated releases of older games, planned for launch by March 31, 2028.
This covers updated versions and games brought to new platforms, and so far, only four titles have been officially announced: Civilization 7 for Meta Quest VR (coming April 10, 2025), Civilization 7 for Switch 2 (June 5, 2025), WWE 2K25 for Switch 2 (July 22, 2025), and Borderlands 4 for Switch 2 (release date not yet announced).
We might see Red Dead Redemption 2 brought to new platforms, potentially as a port or remaster. A remastered version of Grand Theft Auto 4 is also a possibility, along with the already confirmed remakes of Max Payne.

When will the RDR 2 ports be released?
Recent reports suggest that Red Dead Redemption 2 might be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the upcoming Switch 2 before 2025 is over.
Preorder the RDR 2 ports
Since official versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the upcoming Switch 2 haven’t been revealed yet, we don’t know when or if preorders will be available.
RDR 2 ports trailer
We haven’t seen any trailers for potential Red Dead Redemption 2 ports, and no trailer footage has appeared online yet.
Rockstar’s next release
The highly anticipated game GTA 6 has been pushed back from a May 2026 release to November 2026. It’s currently unclear whether Rockstar Games will create any potential updates to Red Dead Redemption 2 themselves, or if they’ll bring in another development team to handle that.
Take-Two’s stance on ports
Take-Two, the company behind Rockstar Games, is committed to releasing games on new platforms. CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that they carefully adapt each game for a new release, striving to make it a unique and high-quality experience.
We don’t simply re-release old games; we significantly improve the technology, update the graphics, and boost how well they run. That’s why our remastered games are usually so successful.
In 2021, a remastered collection of three classic Grand Theft Auto games – called Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition – was released by Grove Street. Although the launch was plagued with technical problems, the game still proved incredibly popular, selling around 10 million copies.
