An exceptional assortment of exceptionally scarce and high-value Magic: The Gathering cards are being sold at auction, and if you happen to have several million dollars on hand, these coveted items could soon be part of your collection.
The original Magic: The Gathering Alpha set contains some of the world’s most expensive trading cards, with the Black Lotus being among the most notable examples. This card frequently fetches astronomical prices when it goes up for sale due to its scarcity and historical significance. A well-preserved Black Lotus has even been sold for millions on its own.
A significant auction for Magic: The Gathering, one of the largest ever held, is now available on eBay from thelotusvale. But these aren’t ordinary trading cards; instead, they are a special collection of art proofs from the first edition, each featuring exclusive sketches by some of the game’s original artists.
A Magic: The Gathering art proof set is up for auction
Artproof cards stand out due to their unique backs, which differ from the standard design found on most Magic: The Gathering cards. This feature makes them unsuitable for use in official tournaments. Instead, these cards are often presented as special mementos to artists who contribute to the card designs. They can be auctioned off or kept by the creators, making them valuable and hard-to-find items.
The high-priced auction features artist proofs from the earliest collections of Magic: The Gathering. Not only do these cards bear the signatures of the artists, but in most cases, the reverse sides show unique artwork crafted by the illustrators themselves.
An exception are the card designs created by artist Quinton Hoover, who sadly passed away in 2013. The artwork for these cards was personally handled by illustrators who knew him, which makes them a heartfelt homage to one of the pioneering minds behind the Magic: The Gathering universe.
Indeed, the Black Lotus is present, but unlike usual, it carries a signature and no artwork. In its place, you’ll find an early concept art piece of the Darker Lotus (a witty card from the Unglued collection), sketched by Christopher Rush on the reverse side.
I’m utterly amazed at the meticulous effort required to amass this extraordinary and one-of-a-kind collection of Magic: The Gathering cards. While the investment may appear substantial at first glance, upon closer inspection, it’s not as extravagant as it seems given the rarity and value of these treasured gems.
It’s likely that he’s already aware of the collection, but it might be a good idea to reach out to Post Malone since he invested a significant amount in The One Ring card. Given his interest in unique items, this particular set seems tailor-made for him.
