Renowned Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck, nominee for the Oscar-winning film “I Am Not Your Negro,” has been invited as the Special Guest at the 56th installment of the Visions du Réel documentary festival, taking place from April 4th to the 13th.
At the upcoming festival, Peck is scheduled to conduct a workshop, showcase a collection of his past projects, and screen his most recent full-length production titled “Ernest Cole: Rediscovered”.
Emilie Bujès, the festival’s artistic director, stated that Peck’s work holds “extraordinary political influence and cinematic power.” Moreover, she noted that his films are deeply connected to a unique and thoughtful perspective on world events and history, often featuring influential figures who are skillfully portrayed in eloquent, well-crafted, and literary narratives.
The festival acknowledged that the filmmaker’s works delve into discrepancies within mainstream Western history, illuminating overlooked aspects of the narrative, frequently creating portraits of influential politicians, artists, or figures who have publicly challenged this version of events. For instance, the 1990 and 2000 films “Lumumba, La Mort du prophète” and “Lumumba” respectively, focused on Congolese politician Patrice Lumumba, while the most recent film, “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found,” centered around South African photographer Ernest Cole. Another example is the 2016 film “I Am Not Your Negro,” which highlighted the work of writer James Baldwin.
Peck’s work was described as “reimagining activist films” by the festival, where he creatively employs a cinematic, lyrical, and deeply personal vocabulary, effortlessly blending genres and mediums.
“The four-part series ‘Exterminate All the Brutes,’ produced by HBO, serves as an illustration of this. This production will be showcased at the festival and offers a trip through time, presenting a radical reinterpretation of European colonialism’s history, spanning from America to Africa. Through personal, visual, and literary storytelling, it vividly revisits some of the most troubling periods in human history, bringing these events into sharp focus up until today.” The series was honored with a Peabody Award in 2022.
Peck’s cinematic works feature “The Man on the Shore” (Cannes Competition, 1993), “Lumumba” (Directors’ Fortnight, Cannes, 2000), “Sometimes in April” (Berlinale Competition, 2005), “Moloch Tropical” (Toronto, 2009 and Berlinale, 2010) and “Murder in Pacot” (Toronto, 2014 and Berlinale, 2015).
Peck’s movies include “The Man on the Shore,” shown at Cannes Competition in 1993; “Lumumba,” shown at Directors’ Fortnight, Cannes, in 2000; “Sometimes in April,” shown at Berlinale Competition in 2005; “Moloch Tropical,” shown at both Toronto and Berlinale festivals in 2009-2010, and “Murder in Pacot,” shown at Toronto and Berlinale festivals in 2014-2015.
Back in 2017, I had the privilege of showcasing a profound documentary titled “I Am Not Your Negro,” which centered around the life and thoughts of James Baldwin. This masterpiece earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature and went on to win the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Berlinale. In the following year, it clinched a BAFTA and a César for the best documentary film.
Fast forward to 2021, my latest creation, “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found,” made its grand debut as a Special Screening at Cannes and was honored with the L’Œil d’Or. Each of these films is a testament to the power of storytelling and the importance of shedding light on untold narratives.
Peck has garnered numerous accolades: in 2021, he was bestowed with the Irene Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award for his human rights efforts. Additionally, that same year, he received a lifetime achievement award from DOC NYC, followed by another one at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto in 2024. Moreover, he has served on the jury of prestigious film festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, and Sundance.
From 1995 to 1997, he served as Minister of Culture for the Republic of Haiti.
The full program for the 56th edition of Visions du Réel will be released on March 12.
