Rani Mukerji’s ‘Mardaani 3’ Sets Production Start and Creative Team for ‘Dark, Deadly and Brutal’ Film (EXCLUSIVE)

As a long-time admirer of Indian cinema and a connoisseur of the gritty, action-packed “Mardaani” franchise, I can hardly contain my excitement for the third installment! Having followed Rani Mukerji’s illustrious career over the years, it is truly inspiring to see her return as the fearless Shivani Shivaji Roy.

In a new development for India’s Yash Raj Films (YRF), they have chosen fresh directorial talent to lead the third edition of their successful “Mardaani” series, with Rani Mukerji reprising her role as police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy. Aayush Gupta, writer of “The Railway Men”, will craft the screenplay, and Abhiraj Minawala has been selected to take charge as director.

The production is set to kick off in April, signifying the first installment since “Mardaani 2” released in 2019. This announcement originates from Aditya Chopra, head of YRF, who has recognized Gupta and Minawala as emerging talents within the studio’s creative sphere.

On “War 2,” Minawala is now taking on the role of associate director. Previously, he was involved in YRF productions such as “Band Baaja Baraat,” “Sultan,” and “Tiger 3.” Meanwhile, Gupta is joining the team following the international acclaim of his screenwriting debut for Netflix’s “The Railway Men,” a YRF production that marked his first venture into streaming.

In a statement, Mukerji excitedly revealed that we’ll begin filming ‘Mardaani 3’ in April 2025. Once more, I’m honored to play the role of the fierce cop character in ‘Mardaani 3’. This is my way of paying tribute to all the courageous, hardworking police officers who put themselves on the line daily, often going unnoticed, to ensure our safety.

The actress characterized the forthcoming episode as “grim, lethal, and merciless,” emphasizing the series’ obligation to satisfy audience demands. “Mardaani” is currently Hindi cinema’s most prominent female-centric franchise, with its two preceding installments garnering commercial success throughout the last decade.

Speaking about ‘Mardaani 3,’ we aimed to discover a script that would elevate the viewing experience of a ‘Mardaani’ series movie. I am genuinely thrilled with what we have so far, and I can only hope that the audience shares my enthusiasm after seeing ‘Mardaani 3’ in cinemas.

The third installment of “Mardaani,” titled as such, is set to hit theaters globally in the year 2026. Recently, Mukerji graced screens with a critical and commercial triumph, “Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway” (released in 2023).
