Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, is facing criticism for how he responded to complaints about the initial performance issues with Borderlands 4. He sarcastically told one fan to “code his own” game engine.
Borderlands 4 got off to a great start, with more players on its first day than any other game in the series. However, some PC players have been experiencing performance problems and crashes.
Even after the September 13th stability update addressed some problems, players are still experiencing issues.
Because of the criticism, Randy Pitchford has been offering suggestions to enhance the game, like enabling DLSS and disabling certain visual effects. However, when a player asked him to improve the game’s appearance without using AI upscaling, he responded defensively.
Randy Pitchford claps back at Borderlands 4 fan
Pitchford challenged developers to create their own game engine and demonstrate its functionality, promising to become a customer if they succeeded.
It’s clear the current team lacks the expertise needed, despite having access to support, recommendations, code, and architectural guidance from leading hardware and tech companies, as well as the insights of top graphics engine developers. They don’t seem to understand what you do.
We’d love to see you build your own engine and share your process! If you succeed, we’re interested in becoming your customer. Current solutions are falling short, and it’s frustrating given the wealth of excellent hardware expertise and resources available.

Despite claiming it was meant as sarcasm, fans didn’t appreciate the message and criticized Pitchford for responding that way to a player who had a legitimate issue.
One person responded with disbelief, saying, “Seriously? That’s how you’re reacting? It doesn’t look good.” They continued, stating that this was a valid issue and reacting defensively wasn’t helpful.
One player said that if a chef responded to a complaint about an overcooked steak in that way, they would never return to the restaurant.
This isn’t the first controversy surrounding Pitchford and a new Borderlands game. Before a previous release, he faced backlash for suggesting that dedicated fans should be willing to pay $80 for games, and he later issued an apology.
