Rami Malek Says He Was ‘Thrown’ On the Hood of a Cop Car in Racial Profiling Incident: ‘I May Well Be Going to Jail for Something I’ve Not Done’

In a talk with The Guardian, Rami Malek opened up about his encounters with racism as a person of Egyptian descent living in America. He recounted an instance of racial profiling where he was placed on the bonnet of a police vehicle.

Malek stated that he ended up on the hood of a police car due to a liquor store robbery, where a woman’s purse was stolen. The officers suspected the thief was of Latin origin, as I resemble the description they provided. I can still recall how scalding hot the engine was, likely because they were rushing to the scene and it nearly burnt my hands.

Fortunately, the “Mr. Robot” actor had a quick-thinking friend present who could explain Rami Malek’s ethnicity to the arresting officer. (or)

In a fortunate turn of events, Rami Malek’s “Mr. Robot” co-star had a friend handy who could clarify his race to the officers apprehending him.

My friend, who was of Caucasian descent, quickly corrected the officer, saying, ‘In fact, he’s Egyptian, not Latin.’ This moment in the police car made me chuckle, but I also felt uneasy because I thought to myself, ‘I might be about to be imprisoned for a crime I didn’t commit.’

Malek expressed concern that discrimination against immigrants in the U.S. might become more severe now that Donald Trump will be inaugurated on January 20th. He further clarified that Barack Obama’s books, “Dreams from My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope,” continue to serve as a powerful inspiration for him, especially during times when election outcomes are not favorable.

Malek expressed that the notion of a person, with a father born in Kenya and a mother from Kansas, rising to become the President of the United States was one of the most inspiring instances symbolizing the American dream. However, he lamented that this concept has been turned upside down. He can only hope that such a situation sparks the very best within us.
