So, I was reading an interview with Jalmari Helander, the new director for the next Rambo movie, and he was talking about what he’s got planned. Basically, he wants to do something different with it – not just rehash the old stuff. He was explaining his vision to TopMob, and it sounds like he’s really thinking about how to make this Rambo film stand out.
Jalmari Helander is a top action filmmaker right now. His 2022 film, Sisu, became incredibly popular for its almost entirely silent main character who faces off against endless groups of Nazis in a brutally exciting and rewarding way.
The highly anticipated sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, arrives in theaters on November 21, 2025. Our review of the first film, Sisu 2, gave it 5 stars, and we noted that the action sequences become increasingly impressive, culminating in a truly satisfying showdown between the hero and villain.
It’s not surprising the director is now heading a major Hollywood franchise. In a recent conversation, he suggested what he envisions for the new John Rambo film.
Next Rambo will be an adventure movie

Noah Centineo is in talks to star as a young John Rambo in an upcoming film. As of October 3, 2025, director Helander mentioned he’d be traveling to Bangkok soon to begin intense preparations, with filming scheduled to start in January.
The upcoming movie will tell the story of John Rambo’s time in the Vietnam War, showing how he became the skilled and troubled character we know from the original First Blood film in 1982. According to an official statement, the movie will focus on the events that turned him into an iconic action hero.
When asked about his version of the film, Helmader explained it wouldn’t be as grim as the previous two Rambo movies.

He’s referring to the films Rambo (2008) and Rambo: Last Blood (2019). In the 2008 film, Rambo leads a team of mercenaries into Burma to save Christian missionaries. The 2019 movie takes place in Mexico, where Rambo attempts to rescue his niece, who has been kidnapped and is being forced into sex trafficking by a cartel.
Both films featured a very high number of deaths, and the upcoming prequel may be similar. However, the director hopes the new movie will be more exciting and encourage kids to get outside and play, like the character Rambo. He’s curious to see if it will inspire that kind of adventurous play.
