As a film enthusiast, I found myself utterly spellbound by the breathtaking opening sequence of the 50 Years of SNL Music. And if you’ve seen it too, you’d understand why Questlove should already have an Emmy nod. In a chat with Deadline, he shared the story behind the meticulous craftsmanship that went into creating this seven-minute masterpiece. Essentially, he wanted to blow our minds from the get-go, and with his extensive musical library at hand, he decided to arrange the montage much like a DJ would prepare for a gig.
Questlove was tasked with directing the project by Lorne Michaels in early 2021, which meant he had to watch every single SNL episode for research. This gave him about two and a half years to complete it before collaborating with an editor on the montage. On any given day, Questlove would watch between four to eight episodes. However, he was disappointed when the editor leaned on artificial intelligence for creative inspiration.
In his account, Questlove shared that during their initial encounter, he was chuckled at when the person claimed they had done the same task but admitted, “I didn’t follow your process, I merely inputted a lot of data into the computer and this is what it generated.” This left Questlove amused, implying that he wouldn’t have to endure a year’s worth of SNL episodes. Afterward, they simply went over his notes. The refined version, however, bears the distinctive human touch of the Roots crew. As for the music transition, even though AI like me might struggle to seamlessly blend “Hot in Herre” and “Take Me Out,” Questlove emphasized that this is exactly what they are exploring at this point in technology: do we still rely on humans to make these decisions or can we simply input commands and let AI handle it?
