Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Prequel Would Be The Perfect Miniseries

So, I’ve been hearing Quentin Tarantino talk a lot lately, especially with the release of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair – which, by the way, is fantastic seeing Volumes 1 and 2 combined as he always intended. But what really got me excited was him mentioning again that he wants to do a prequel focusing on Bill’s backstory. Honestly, I think that story would be perfect as a miniseries – it’s got so much potential, and a longer format would really let him explore it properly.

During recent promotional appearances, Quentin Tarantino surprised fans by adding a previously unseen scene from Kill Bill to the video game Fortnite. He also shared some unusual thoughts on actors Paul Dano and Owen Wilson, and has been continuing to plan his tenth and final movie, a project he’s been working on for a long time. Additionally, he’s revisited an older concept for a Kill Bill spin-off, which he thinks would work well as a short, multi-episode series.

Quentin Tarantino Still Wants To Make A Kill Bill Prequel About Bill’s Origin Story

While hosting a screening of the Fortniteexclusive lost chapter, “Yuki’s Revenge,” at his Los Angeles theater, the Vista, Quentin Tarantino floated the idea of a Kill Bill* prequel. He emphasized he wasn’t currently developing it, stating he has “other priorities,” but seemed enthusiastic about the possibility.

While filming Kill Bill, Quentin Tarantino became interested in telling the story of the character Bill and how he became who he was. However, after finishing the film, he was so exhausted that he put any plans for further Kill Bill projects on hold. He’s always envisioned exploring Bill’s past and revealing the events that shaped him.

He presented Bill’s backstory as the story of the three men who shaped him. Throughout Kill Bill, we learn about the figures who raised and trained Bill, ultimately turning him into the ruthless killer who wronged the Bride. These include his demanding but skilled teacher, Pai Mei; the legendary swordsmith Hattori Hanzō; and Esteban Vihaio, a pimp who built his gang by recruiting the children of his sex workers.

Tarantino has joked that he might not have time to fully explain Bill’s backstory, given his other creative projects. While I’d enjoy seeing anything new from Tarantino, I think a prequel to Kill Bill would work especially well as a limited series.

The Stories Of Bill’s Three Mentors Should Be Adapted Into A Limited Series

I’ve been following Tarantino’s career for years, and I think a TV miniseries would be the perfect way to tell Bill’s backstory. He’s hinted at moving away from films, and it seems like TV really appeals to him now. I know he thought about directing some episodes of Justified: City Primeval, and he’s even talked about creating an entire Bounty Law series – I’d be so excited to see either of those happen!

Bill’s upbringing with three different mentors can be seen as separate, distinct parts of his life story. Similar to the film Kill Bill, each of these periods reflects a different movie genre: Pai Mei represents the fantastical style of wuxia films, Hanzō embodies classic martial arts movies, and Esteban draws from the harsh realism of Mexican crime thrillers.

A miniseries format would allow Tarantino to really delve into Bill’s backstory and the influences of the father figures in his life. We could see how Pai Mei trained him to be a ruthless killer, and how Esteban shaped him into someone incapable of healthy relationships – similar to the way Dick Whitman’s upbringing in Mad Men affected his ability to connect with others.

Tarantino Should Still Do Kill Bill: Volume 3

Even if he doesn’t explore Bill’s backstory, I still hope Tarantino eventually makes Kill Bill: Volume 3. We need to see Nikki hunt down the Bride and B.B. in a third film, both to witness Uma Thurman and Maya Hawke sharing the screen and to finish the story’s exploration of how complicated and endless revenge can be.

Because Quentin Tarantino sees Kill Bill as a single film, a potential Kill Bill: Volume 3 might not be considered his tenth movie. Even if it is counted as his tenth, it would be an epic way to end his filmmaking career – like a grand finale, similar to Avengers: Endgame for Marvel.

Currently, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Quentin Tarantino’s final film, and it’s a fitting one. The movie cleverly reflects on Tarantino’s own filmmaking, fondly remembers a past time in Hollywood, and celebrates the magic of movies. It’s a nearly perfect way to end his film career.

Quentin Tarantino has said he plans to make one more film, and many fans hope it will be Kill Bill: Volume 3. If Once Upon a Time in Hollywood felt like a final statement from the director, a third Kill Bill movie would be a celebratory return – a chance for one last exciting, action-filled, and creatively ambitious project. It could bring together all his favorite actors and explore every style and genre he loves.
