As an old-school movie buff who’s seen his fair share of films from the golden age to the latest blockbusters, I can wholeheartedly appreciate Quentin Tarantino‘s passion for cinema and his unapologetic stance on movies like “Joker: Folie à Deux.
Quentin Tarantino caused quite a stir in late October by expressing praise for “Joker: Folie à Deux” and stating that Joaquin Phoenix delivered one of the greatest performances he’s ever witnessed, which seemingly upset many film enthusiasts. The Academy Award-winning director recently appeared on “The Joe Rogan Experience” to address some of the negative reactions towards his admiration for the controversial “Joker” sequel.
Tarantino stated on a talk show that he enjoys ‘Joker 2.’ This comment sparked around 150 articles about it, and unfortunately, some people wrote articles criticizing him for his opinion. Then, they’d leave comments calling him names such as “asshole” and expressing their dislike for the movie. Tarantino wonders why he is being labeled an “asshole” just because he expressed a preference for the film. He points out that everyone either likes or dislikes a movie, and he is simply stating his opinion without promoting it in any way. So, who cares about his taste in movies anyway? Why should anyone care about what he personally enjoys?
The director went on to say, ‘Apparently, I’m thoughtless for not noticing something.’ He then added, ‘Why should it matter to me what you see or don’t see? Some might comment, ‘He seems oblivious.’ To that, I would respond: There are plenty of things I could point out that you’re overlooking, but I couldn’t care less if you’re unaware of them.’
During a conversation on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast,” Quentin Tarantino voiced his views about “Joker 2” that received predominantly unfavorable reviews and underperformed financially, earning only $58 million in the U.S. and $206 million globally. These figures paled in comparison to the $1 billion gross of the original “Joker” film from 2019.
Tarantino expressed his deep appreciation for the film, stating that he went into it anticipating being impressed by the cinematic aspects. However, he believed it would be an intellectual exercise rather than a cohesive movie experience. Yet, he was surprised to find himself fully immersed in it. He particularly enjoyed the musical sequences and found pleasure in songs with simple, ordinary lyrics, such as “For Once in My Life.” In fact, he discovered a new appreciation for the song’s lyrics that he had never experienced before.
Tarantino praised director Todd Phillips for embodying the character of The Joker, stating: “The Joker himself directed this film. From its entire concept to his extravagant spending of studio funds – he’s spending it just like The Joker would, you see? … He’s flipping off all the comic book enthusiasts. He’s flipping off the movie audience. He’s flipping off Hollywood. He’s flipping off anyone who holds stock in DC and Warner Brothers… And Todd Phillips is essentially The Joker. This film is a Joker movie, make no mistake about it, he is The Joker.
