With the new HBO series, Welcome to Derry, about to premiere, Stephen King’s novel It is getting a lot of attention. However, director Quentin Tarantino has long criticized the book, claiming it heavily resembles A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Stephen King’s horror novel, It, came out in 1986 and tells the story of a terrifying creature that preys on children in a small town. It was originally adapted into a popular mini-series in 1990, and later received two large-scale movie adaptations in 2017 and 2019, which together earned over $1 billion at the box office.
Andy Muchsietti, who directed the previous two films, is now in charge of a new series called Welcome to Derry. Set in 1962, the series shows Pennywise the Dancing Clown terrorizing the town’s children with both mental and physical attacks.
After watching the initial episodes, we noted in our review of ‘Welcome to Derry’ that the show explores themes like inherited trauma, fear, and racism, rather than simply focusing on the villain’s backstory. Though we enjoy this new take, Quentin Tarantino has strong criticisms of the original book that started it all.
Quentin Tarantino believes It just replaced Freddy Krueger with Pennywise

During an appearance on ‘Eli Roth’s History of Horror Uncut,’ Quentin Tarantino praised the film adaptations of Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ and ‘The Green Mile.’ However, he had a more complicated opinion of the novel ‘It.’
Quentin Tarantino argues that Stephen King’s It closely resembles A Nightmare on Elm Street. He believes King essentially copied the premise, swapping Freddy Krueger with Pennywise. According to Tarantino, King saw the potential in Nightmare on Elm Street – appreciating its cleverness – and then decided to create his own, much longer, version as a 560-page novel.
Tarantino also mentioned he loves the original book, praising the author’s detailed writing and strong prose. He contrasted this with what he felt was lacking in director Wes Craven’s approach.
He concludes by strongly reiterating his initial point: without the decorative elements, the cake essentially copies the themes of the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street.
