Dre, who owns the club, is trapped inside with her brother-in-law Barry, bartender Jimmy, intern Kelsey, and performers Sam, Ginsey, Nico, and Jax. Meanwhile, Dre’s wife, Lizzy, and her patient Jane are trying to reach them from a nearby hospital. Joining them at the club are the well-known performer Yasmine, Lizzy’s fiancé Pops, and her friends Tiger and Twiz.

Right away, we learn that Jax has been infected. When he turns into a zombie, the group can’t bear to kill him, so they lock him in a cage to watch how the virus affects him. Soon after, Jimmy is killed when Yasmine arrives at the club but doesn’t manage to warn everyone about the approaching zombies in time.

As a huge fan, I was genuinely gutted by the deaths of Pops and Ginsey. Pops sacrificed herself to restore power to the bar, and it was brutal – she used live wires to take out a horde of infected rats, protecting everyone else. Then there was Ginsey, who bravely saved Sam from some walkers while they were searching for a vehicle, but unfortunately got overwhelmed in the process. Both deaths really hit hard.

As the others distract the large group of infected with music, they manage to escape and get to the boat Pops had prepared for their rescue – for both her and Lizzie. Tiger bravely chooses to stay behind and fight, delaying the infected. While it’s not explicitly shown, it’s heavily suggested that Tiger doesn’t survive.

While technically a zombie movie, Queens of the Dead focuses more on the relationships between the characters than on scares or gore. This approach makes the deaths of characters like Ginsey and Pops feel more impactful, and it’s ultimately more satisfying when the surviving characters make it through.

Queens Of The Dead Introduces A New Origin For The Zombie Virus

The zombie outbreak in Queens of the Dead doesn’t have a clear origin, but the evidence suggests it’s linked to a bad batch of party drugs circulating in New York City. Nico, as a drug dealer, has some of these contaminated drugs, which increases the danger of the infection spreading.

Unfortunately, Nico accidentally puts Jax at risk of catching the virus when they both take drugs before their Halloween concert. This event is important to Nico’s story throughout the film. Nico is a young, confident performer who also struggles with ego, and it’s revealed they are dating Jane and are close friends with Jax.

Jax getting infected is a harsh shock for Nico, particularly when they talk to the now-zombie Jax and realize he’s no longer himself. This deeply affects Nico, leading to a moment of intense emotional struggle in the third act where they nearly lose hope. Thankfully, Dre and Sam distract the zombies, rescuing Nico from a desperate situation.

Queens Of The Dead’s Final Shot Doesn’t Bode Well For The Survivors

The movie Queens of the Dead ends with Dre, Lizzy, Sam, Nico, Barry, Kelsey, Jane, Yasmine, and Twiz escaping New York City on a boat. But a final, shocking moment shows Nico has been infected – their eyes snap open, and they appear to be turning into a zombie.

Ideally, the other survivors will notice Nico’s change and be able to protect themselves, even if they can’t save him. But there’s a risk that Nico’s infection won’t be discovered until the boat leaves Manhattan, which could allow the infection to spread to the rest of the country.

The film ends on a heartbreaking note, especially considering how much the audience has come to care about the characters. Even those initially presented as unpleasant, like Barry and Yasmine, develop and ultimately try to rescue the others. The fact that none of them survive is a truly sad way to conclude the story.

It’s only when Ginsey makes a selfless act that Sam realizes they need to embrace who they really are, leading to the return of their drag performance identity.

This moment allows Sam to fully accept who they are, and they even rescue Dre when surrounded by zombies. At the same time, Barry and Yasmine step up to fight off the zombie horde, uniting former rivals and bullies to help everyone survive the chaos.
