Quantic Dream, the studio behind story-driven games like Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, is surprising fans with its next project. Instead of a single-player experience, they’re releasing a multiplayer game called Spellcasters Chronicles. Players will get a first look through a closed beta on Steam before the end of the year.
Spellcasters Chronicles is a free-to-play game that mixes fast-paced action with strategic planning, drawing inspiration from popular MOBAs and deckbuilding games. Two teams of three players will battle it out in 25-minute matches, aiming to capture key areas and destroy the opposing team’s ‘Lifestones’ to win.
Players control powerful Spellcasters, each based on a classic fantasy character and with unique skills and strengths. Battles happen in big, multi-level arenas where all Spellcasters can fly anywhere they want.
Spellcasters Chronicles features a deep deck-building system with more than 50 different spells and summons, letting players carefully plan strategies and try out new team combinations. Players can summon powerful creatures – even giants called Titans – to help them win battles.
Even though this is the studio’s first game with multiplayer, it will still have a strong story, told through what Quantic Dream describes as a narrative shaped by the players themselves.
“[Spellcasters Chronicles] is a departure from our past games, but it still focuses on what we do best: letting players influence the story – and this time, they’ll be doing it together,” explained game director Gregorie Diaconu.
We don’t yet know exactly what this “community narrative” will be, but Quantic Dream says they’ll share details in the months ahead. If you’re interested in learning more about the game, you can watch a detailed gameplay showcase and a question-and-answer session with the developers on October 17th at TwitchCon San Diego. The event will run from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM Pacific Time (2:30 PM to 9:30 PM Eastern Time).
We haven’t heard much from Quantic Dream recently. They revealed Star Wars Eclipse in 2021, but haven’t shared any updates since. However, in a recent announcement about Spellcasters Chronicles, Quantic Dream’s president, David Cage, confirmed they are still working on Star Wars Eclipse, offering reassurance that the game hasn’t been abandoned.
Quantic Dream hasn’t created a new game since Detroit: Become Human in 2018, but they have published a few, such as the underwater exploration game Under the Waves. The studio was bought by Chinese company NetEase in 2022, and they state recent changes within NetEase haven’t impacted their work.
