PS4 support is being phased out, so expect PSN services to suffer

Sony is beginning to wind down support for the PlayStation 4, five years after the release of the PlayStation 5. It’s expected that some online features for the PS4 will stop working in the first half of 2026. This move is likely preparing players for the potential launch of the PlayStation 6, which is currently anticipated in 2027.

PS4 will lose some functionality in 2026

Earlier this month, Insider Gaming received information suggesting PlayStation 4 users will soon experience some changes. Key features like in-game messaging could be removed, and the ability to save screenshots directly to the console may also be lost.

Several features have been listed that are set to be turned off when spring 2026 rolls around:

  1. Activity API;
  2. Shared media API;
  3. Storage for additional game materials (TSS);
  4. Storage for additional user information (TUS);
  5. Profile and user functions;
  6. Word filters in messages.

We don’t have a specific date for when these options will no longer be available. This is disappointing for those still planning to buy a PlayStation 5, especially since prices have increased and the console now has less storage space.

So, it looks like chatting with friends on PS4 is about to get a bit harder with these new changes. I’m hearing that Sony might be doing this because they’re already working on the PlayStation 6! The rumor is they’re aiming to make the PS6 super affordable, hoping to get all of us PS4 players to upgrade when it comes out.

Developers are beginning to stop supporting the older console, which has been available for over ten years. For example, *Genshin Impact* will cease receiving updates for the PS4 in April 2026, and PUBG support will end this November. If other game creators follow suit, it may not be worthwhile for Sony to maintain online services for the console.
