The movie Project Hail Mary has become a huge success, breaking Amazon’s box office records.
The sci-fi film premiered in theaters on March 20th and had a hugely successful opening weekend, earning $80.6 million in the US. It continued to perform incredibly well during its second weekend, bringing in another $54.5 million – a drop of only 32% – and has now broken yet another box office record.
Just two weeks after its release, Project Hail Mary has earned over $300 million worldwide, making it Amazon MGM’s most successful film ever. This beats the previous record of $276 million held by 2023’s Creed III, as reported by Variety. This achievement marks a significant win for Amazon, which acquired MGM in 2022 for $8.5 billion.
The movie Project Hail Mary earned another $54.1 million worldwide this weekend, playing in 86 countries. It performed particularly well in the United Kingdom ($6.3 million), China ($7.7 million), Australia ($3.8 million), South Korea ($3.3 million), and Germany ($3.4 million).
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and based on the novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary tells the story of a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory. As his memories return, he discovers he’s on a crucial mission to save the sun from a dangerous threat, and a surprising friendship may hold the answer.
Okay, let me tell you about the cast! Ryan Gosling is fantastic as the main character, Ryland Grace, and he’s joined by some seriously talented actors. You might recognize Sandra Hüller – she was incredible in Anatomy of a Fall. And Lionel Boyce, who you’ll know from The Bear, is also in this, along with James Ortiz, Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, Priya Kansara, Malachi Kirby, Liz Kingsman, Mia Soteriou, and Orion Lee. It’s a really strong ensemble!
Every Box Office Record Broken By Project Hail Mary
Project Hail Mary had a phenomenal opening weekend, shattering several box office records. It became the highest-grossing domestic debut of 2026 and Amazon MGM’s biggest opening ever. It also marked the best March opening for a movie that wasn’t part of an existing franchise, and the biggest opening weekend for director duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, surpassing the $69 million earned by The Lego Movie. It was Ryan Gosling’s second-highest opening weekend, following the massive $162 million debut of Barbie.
Just six days after its release, Project Hail Mary earned over $100 million in North American theaters. This makes it the fourth film starring Ryan Gosling to reach that level of success, following Barbie, La La Land, and Remember the Titans. During its second weekend, the movie brought in $54.5 million, making it the second-highest-grossing second weekend for a non-sequel or franchise film, only behind the $75.6 million earned by Avatar in 2009.
How Is Project Hail Mary Being Received?
Not only was Project Hail Mary a box office hit, but it’s also been highly praised by critics, earning a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. They’ve called it a remarkable combination of smart storytelling and heartfelt emotion, a visually impressive space adventure, and highlighted Ryan Gosling’s captivating performance. Even more impressively, audiences have given the film a 96% rating.
