The movie version of Project Hail Mary, from Amazon MGM, differs from the book’s original ending. Released in theaters on March 20th, the highly anticipated sci-fi film brings Andy Weir’s novel to life – nearly ten years after his success with The Martian. Because the book has a dedicated following, any changes to the story could have significantly impacted how the film was received. However, the alterations made for the movie actually work well.
Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for the ending of Project Hail Mary.
The movie Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a former science teacher who unexpectedly finds himself on a crucial space mission to save the sun—and Earth—from extinction. The story unfolds through two timelines: the present, following Grace’s journey on the Hail Mary spaceship, and flashbacks that explain how he became involved in the mission in the first place.
I was completely captivated by the story of Grace, who meets an alien named Rocky way out in space! Rocky’s trying to save his planet, just like Grace is trying to save Earth. The book, Project Hail Mary, mostly follows their incredible journey as they learn to understand each other and become friends, all while working together to figure out how to save both their worlds. It’s a really heartwarming and exciting story!
Grace and Rocky each face a terrible danger: the Petrova Line, a region of space affected by a strange, star-eating microbe called astrophage. This microbe has already destroyed several stars, and it’s now heading towards Earth’s sun, which would plunge our solar system into darkness. Luckily, Grace and Rocky discover taumoeba, a different microbe that actually hunts and destroys astrophage. They must find a way to capture taumoeba and bring it back to their respective planets.
The team behind the movie version of Project Hail Mary—writer Drew Goddard and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller—mostly stayed true to the source material, but they included a few new details at the end that give one character a particularly satisfying moment.
Project Hail Mary Makes A Positive Change to the Book’s Ending

Both the book and movie of Project Hail Mary conclude with Grace sending samples and instructions for saving Earth’s sun via space probes. He then uses his remaining fuel to rescue Rocky from the taumoeba – a lifeform he discovered was damaging his ship. Together, Rocky and Grace save Erid, and the Eridians build Grace a comfortable home on their planet where he lives out his life.
The book reveals that after years spent on Erid, Grace learns his message got back to Earth and successfully saved the sun, as evidenced by its increasing brightness. The movie differs slightly, adding a closing scene shown from the perspective of Eva Stratt, the leader of the Hail Mary project, depicting events on Earth.
Throughout Project Hail Mary, we learn about Stratt through memories, and a surprising friendship develops between her and Grace. This happens even though Stratt made the difficult decision to send Grace on a dangerous mission knowing it might cost him his life.

The film adaptation of Project Hail Mary shows us what Earth was like after the Hail Mary spacecraft departed. We see an older version of Stratt getting instructions from Grace, but the Earth she’s on has frozen oceans and a much darker sun. Throughout the book, Stratt is portrayed as a serious, unsmiling character—she never even laughs at Grace’s jokes, and even her karaoke session is somber. However, in the final scene, when she receives a message from Grace and Rocky, she finally breaks into a smile.
Goddard explained to Mashable that this scene was deliberately written because he views Project Hail Mary as focusing on three main characters. He felt it was important to give Stratt her own significant moment.
I truly enjoy writing this script. At its heart, the story revolves around three main characters and a complex relationship between them. It’s important to ensure the female character gets her due focus and a satisfying arc.
The novel stays entirely within the thoughts of Ryland Grace, but the movie adds a short scene showing things from Stratt’s perspective at the end, giving her character a poignant final moment.
The story also shows, in a more compelling way, that Grace completed his mission. We see the impact of his message on Earth as scientists begin building taumoeba farms – a project designed to save the planet.
